It's Ramadan and I tried to fast today. The bowel rest was actually pretty good for my UC flare ---the problem is when it was time to break the fast this evening I was so starving and otherwise feeling okay that I let my guard down and ate some spicy indian food. I'm so stupid !!! I've never had to watch my diet before so restricting myself is taking some getting used to. Needless to say I'm suffering from my poor decision. Lord help me !

Anything too spicy is not great when you have D. But I ate lots of Indian dishes without aggravating my flare. Especially saag.

Fasting was always my miracle cure. Too bad we need to eat. I personally try not to fall into the trap of thinking it was the Indian food (or Mexican, or Burger, or Dairy, or egg, or whatever it was that particular day), it's probably not the food, it's the flare up :(

The next morning is when the consequence of eating something spicy catches up with me. I have extra urgency, several additional bowel movements, and it's a bit looser than normal. It's a one day penalty. I bounce back pretty fast.
The fast during daytime might make your symptoms better. Just be more careful what you choose to eat at night.
Good luck,

Actually it might be good for you. Curry in particular and Indian food in general tends to go heavy on the turmeric, which can be useful for many types of inflammation including UC.

I agree wodin, but most bases for curry include a lot of onions, garlic and hot chili peppers. I think the chilis are the most aggravating, but the onion and garlic is also very high on the FODMAP scale. I still haven't tried low FODMAP but I may. HA! iPoop has a parrot, cool.

Haha yup. So make sure to insert various pirate phrases intermittently in your mind when reading my posts. Arrr, ya land lubber, land ho!, and the like. As he's often on my shoulder when posting. Either that or perched on the top edge of cellphone as I read posts.

Stay away from spicy, and break your fast with water + some mild food like rice, banana, noodles, consomme, relatively low-fiber so it won't race through your digestive system. / Old Hat (35 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

That's really kinda funny, because I had the opposite experience.
During the first time I flared, I cut back all my favorite foods. Went religiously on the SCD diet, followed all the rules. Kept on bleeding. After about
6 months of always feeling hungry, frustrated with not making much improvement, I caved in. Went out to my favorite Indian restaurant and ate EVERYTHING I wanted. Oh, my gosh, it was the yummiest dinner ever. For the next 2 days, I didn't have any blood at all! Then it came back, but no worse than before. But I was so surprised. I fully expected my Indian food binge would have horrible consequences. I'm so glad to be wrong about
that. ;)
