Hello,

I was diagnosed two month ago after symptoms and two colonscopies in one year. After my lasts scope and diagnosis they put me on mesalimine enemas and hydrocortisone enemas, after two weeks I had a reaction as we think to the mesalinme enema causing constant d every ten minutes so they had me stop and continue the hydro the total four weeks. Everything was fine after stopping hydro, had a little blood but formed stool once a day- well oct 4th more blood and urgency returned and some gas with blood so I called my
GI she put me back on hydro enemas, day 11 is today or 10 I can't recall but I'm waking up around 4:30-5am having to go with urgency and blood about three times then it settles I eat and about three hours after I eat I feel like I have to go and it's just water mucus and some blood. Am I getting worse, are the ebemas bot workingthis time or do I need to give it more time. I'm so worried as I have high anxiety and am scared of prednisone but have two young kids under six and need to feel well to take care of them and work. Any experience uc'ers able to provide some advice. I started tumeric supplement awhile back and just started vsl3. Tia appreciate your help!

What was your diagnosis?

Steroids are a temporary treatment, other maintenance treatments are needed for ulcerative colitis, if you have it.

Doctor just said UC, 20 cm of inflammation. I had a reaction to the mesalimine and I get the feeling she isn't sure what else to do for me. Does this mean the Hydrcort enema isn't working? I plan on calling the GI on Monday but I'm not sure what else she will do. Other than prednisone, she has mentioned that. When I called at the start of this flare her one response was "well you don't need to be admitted yet" I'm not sure I like her bedside manner well my anxiety sure doesn't

There are three classes of ulcerative colitis medications: first is anti-inflammatory mesalamine (that you believe you had a reaction to), second is immunomodulators (like Imuran or 6mp), and biologics like humira or remicade. So there's plenty of other medications to try.

Steroids are a temporary rescue medication while you wait for other medications to work. Whether your steroid enema or prednisone. Your flare could just be getting worse. Certainly, keep your gastroenterologist posted on how well you're doing and when things get worse.

Yes, I have read about the other medications available. My doc put me on hydrocortisone enemas only, this go around-and I'm not sure it's helping. Should I wait a few more days or call and insist on another medication. If I had a reaction from the mesalimine, is there another options like that available other than oral pills? I tend to be sensitive to medication and prefer the enema route as they are less symptomatic. And have you found gi doctors to be quick to put someone on prednisone during a flare?
