I am 15 and doctor said I (probably) have ulcerative colitis

And also, they take the biopsy from the cecum, unless I have pancolitis then that area shouldn't be affected for me

They take biopsies throughout the entire colon.

I will go back to the doctor and say i don't want a colonoscopy and my symptoms are gone. even before I knew what UC was the thought of having a camera shoved up my bum is just urghh the doctor can't make me.

I know I have already have 4 stool tests but just in case shall I have them do another? If there isn't inflammation then can they rule out UC?

When I saw that this thread had only been made yesterday, I wondered how the **** there could be 4 pages of posts. Then I read it and realised that 80% of them were made by jackloadsanumbers.

The only way they can confirm or rule out uc is with a colonoscopy. We've all had colonoscopies and sigmoidoscopies on numerous occasions i can assure you that it's no big deal, you're under anesthesia and never feel a thing. Just get one then you'll know.

There's no guarantee you even have ulcerative colitis, yet you've already spent a lot of time worrying about the repercussions of having it.

Ignoring problems is never a good idea, as they often come back worse than before.

exactly so what I am saying is this: Right now my symptoms are nearly gone. So Either I have ulcerative colitis but it is in remission, or I don't and whatever the problem was is going away. So if I take another stool test, and it comes up with inflammation, then it will show that there is still something there and then I will do the colonoscopy. However, if there is no inflammation this time, then they can rule out UC because even in remission, there is microscopic amounts of inflammation they can find in stool. I will still do the colonoscopy if it comes out with inflammation. But I want to do one last stool test just so that if the test comes out normal, they can rule out UC and conclude the problem is gone.

perhaps I have some other random disease. Call me naive and hopeful, but nature doesn't work according to our diagnosises, maybe I just had a one time inflammation for some reason. I used to get toncilitis a lot as a kid. Probably not, just trying to sound hopeful. But yeah IF the stool test/s comes back normal can they rule it out then? they can't possibly say i need a colonoscopy after the stool test comes back normal

A stool tests for pathogens can tell you whether you have an infection caused by pathogens. A stool tests for inflammation, fecal calprotectin, can tell you whether there's inflammation. Neither test tells you whether ulcerative colitis is present, and neither test can rule out ulcerative colitis. You can assume all day long based on those two tests but it's really an incomplete picture and more than a giant leap of faith to say more without additional diagnostics. A colonoscopy is needed to prove/disprove uc when blood is seen in stool and the cause isn't a pathogen.

but in order for UC to be present, inflammation must be present. If my stool test comes back negative for inflammation or any other problem and all my symptoms are gone, that would prove I am healthy with no disease and no need for further investigation wouldn't it.

Not necessarily, as uc can spontaneously go into a remission for weeks, months, or longer. And a uc in remission has zero inflammation. Before diagnosis, my symptoms (diarrhea, blood, and increased frequency) appeared and disappeared multiple times over a roughly 6 month period until they stayed permanently on and that's when I seeked a diagnosis and medications to control those symptoms.

well just like a colonoscopy can reveal UC even when in remission, the same goes for stool tests. There is still inflammation on a tiny scale that can be picked up in stools. Otherwise they wouldn't pick up people with microscopic colitis. So if that is true, then they wouldn't be able to pick up UC in remission. Which is why i am saying I have wanted to do this: I can go back to the doctor and say that my symptoms are gone can I send a stool sample, if they don't find inflammation, I can send another just in case. It took 4 seperate samples before I got referred to the gastro so if I sent 4 samples and they all came back normal then that would indicate that the initial tests were wrong and it was a bacteria that they missed.

I mean what are they going to do if stool samples are normal and I refuse a colonoscopy? Some people are not comfortable with certain medical procedures so they will have to conclude there is nothing wrong with me, especially if signs point to me not having UC. They can't just leave it on my medical record like 'case not resolved' or 'pending'. In the end it is up to me as a patient to decide whether I want this to not be looked into any further if my stool tests come back normal and my symptoms are gone and they have no right to say I might have UC after that.

These stool tests aren't nearly as accurate as you think they are, many of us here have experienced disconnects between such tests and symptoms (therefore scopes are the gold standard). I'm not going to argue with you on what you should do, and you can do as you please. I do encourage you to listen to your doctor's advice and recommendations.

So if the stool tests are innacurate does that mean that they might have missed a bacterial infection?

That would make sense seeing as there are sooo many different bacteria, some good and some bad and they might not know which one caused it if I had one. I don't know though. I'm not a bacteriologist. If that's the right word.

Yes, false positives and false negatives do happen with pathogen tests. Inaccurate FCP readings happen as well. And that's in a nutshell, why a scope is needed (and why multiple stool tests are often ordered).

I do apologise, but I don't know what FCP means. Well I hope you can understand that the thought of a colonoscopy is really distressing for me. I mean if absolutely necessary I would drag myself to one. But if I did a couple more stool tests now that my symptoms are pretty much almost gone, and they all came back normal, I could say to the doctor that the chance of all these tests being wrong are small, and a colonoscopy sounds really distressing for me, so then hopefully the doctor would say ok there is nothing wrong with you? He would need to understand my reasons for the decision of not doing the colonoscopy if these tests came back normal. I already did 4 stool tests, however (and sorry for being graphic) I only sent them from 2 seperate craps. Basically the first time I sent one vial in. The second time after I went to the pediatrican he said to fill 3 seperate vials, but of course I did them all in one go. So it was only 2 seperate tests basically. And like I said I did 2 blood tests, of which the first was normal, but I am not sure of the second one. Hopefully if they want another blood test that will also come back normal, although that would happen anyway seeing as if I do have UC I am in remission.

FCP = fecal calprotectin stool test. Calprotectin is a stool (fecal) test that is used to detect inflammation in the intestines. Intestinal inflammation is associated with, for example, some bacterial infections and, in people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it is associated with disease activity and severity.

Haha you're just not going to get a forum of IBD patients who've had countless scopes to agree with your trepidation over one :-p

You don't have to agree, just understand that I am severely umcomfortable with one, I just don't want a camera up my bum when I am asleep, in fact I don't want one at all, and It is uncomfortable for me to a severe degree. But yeah as I said, the doctor's job is to conclude the case no matter what. If my stool tests now come back normal, and I refuse a colonoscopy, he can't leave it as pending. So he must either diagnose me or not diagnose me. Now he can't diagnose me without a colonoscopy anyway, but if my tests are normal and my symptoms are gone he can conclude there is nothing wrong. And then hopefully the navy won't mind. I just hope my stool tests are normal and I don't have UC.

Stool tests don't determine if you have UC or dont. Period.
You'd be missing out on the fun of a c-scope by watching the monitor.....too bad.

When did I say they did? They determine whether or not there is inflammation, which in turn rules out the possibility of having UC

the only thing that matters is what the armed forces will think. Hopefully if they look at the records it will then say something along the lines of 'stool test has inflammation' 'suspected UC referred for colonoscopy' 'final stool tests came back normal' and then they won't turn me down or demand I have a colonoscopy hopefully.

Keep us posted.....you are missing our point regarding diagnosis, and you certainly can't determine what a doctor will say on a report.

Wishing won't change the reality. And one can have UC without active inflammation, and stool testing for inflammation does not rule out UC. You implied a conclusion.

You are going into the wrong profession.....you should consider being a lawyer since word play seems to be your strongsuit.

Actually, the cecum can be affected in a form of UC that has only rectal and cecal involvement......then of course, there is CD or other inflammatory bowel diseases such as microscopic colitis.
