What to Do if You Come Down With the Flu

Since I'm running a temp right now of 102 and had the chills last night, I'm guessing I'm coming down with something--hopefully only a cold, but maybe the flu. I know Tylenol is okay to bring down the fever, but is there anything safe to take OTC for the other symptoms? Like Theraflu or something? I know antibiotics are a no-no unless there's no other choice.

Also, I have a relatively high heart rate--121 bpm. Normal for me is 80. Is this something to be concerned over?

some may disagree, but fever is an ok thing - it's just your body fighting off whatever is ailing you - anything 104 and above is a concern - anything less, not so much -

not sure about the heart rate but could be the same thing - just your bodily response to an unwanted invader -

i'm not a pill taker so i just drink lots of water, get extra rest, and ride it out -

I take Tylenol and sweat it out under the covers.

Antibiotics are irrelevant for flu, which is caused by a virus, not bacteria. There's no point in taking them for any viral infections.

A cold or flu you just wait through like anyone else does. Try to avoid cold/flu remedies including NSAIDs.

Nobody should take antibiotics for cold/flu as it doesn't do anything. We can and should take antibiotics at times (surgeries for example), just always be selective and certain antibiotics are necessary for your situation. Antibiotics aren't guaranteed to always make our symptoms worse but we're at increased risk which is why caution is advised.

Most of the Tylenol OTC cold/flu products should be fine. The will have decongestants or antihistamines to help with symptoms. Maybe medication to hep with sleep. This includes Theraflu.

For me, any condition that increases mucus anywhere, usually increases mucus in stool. Flu may also cause diarrhea. You may want some numbing cream to put on your butt for comfort.

cod liver oil, vit d, probiotics, vitamin c, pastured eggs, stay hydrated, rest, rest, rest.

L-lysine, beta glucan, tylenol, expectorant and decongestant. Don't take antihistamine.

I've had the flu a few times in my lifetime, and the joint pain and headache and shaking/shivering from the fever was unbearable. As well, cough was the predominant unrelenting symptom....and I have asthma, so the care I need to take is crucial.

Soy....the choice or suggestion to not take tylenol isn't a good one since the point to keep a fever lower is better for the brain than one that's 104 and a serious concern...especially for children.

Well, the fever went away and my heart has settled down...so maybe it's just a cold. Still feel bleh.

Fevers cause your heart to beat faster. That is a normal response. Sorry you are feeling crummy!

Are you taking Lialda? Lialda gives me flu like symptoms with high fever, sweating, chills, and high heart rate. You may be having the same problem.

No, no Lialda. I think mine was just a "gift" from my students. Handwashing is important!

Feeling pretty much back to 100% today, though I shouldn't have pushed it with Hardee's. My GI tract was NOT pleased with me. nono Probably just a 24-hour bug, unless it comes back.

Really appreciate all the good advice. No doubt I will get sick again, so this saves me a lot of trouble. You guys are great here!
