Old Mike:
What’s for Dinner?: Entner-Doudoroff Metabolism in Escherichia coli:
/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC107313/You may enjoy this read. I was curious myself - if there is a change in oxygen levels within the colon, is it really the 'oxygen increase' itself that causes the explosion the e-coli? (I have my suspicions it is not) Or is it something else as a result of the increased oxygen, since e-coli are more just 'tolerant' of oxygen than strictly (obligate) anaerobic bacteria. So I googled 'preferred metabolism of e-coli' and the above article appears which was interesting to read for a lot of reasons.
If memory serves, there is a significant change in mucus composition in IBD, which I believe leads to more sugar acids available... Is Sialic acid a sugar acid? I believe so.
Also your friends thoughts on Sucrolose, I think that is what he was researching. We know Crohn's is somewhat associated with high sugar intake as well.
Anyway. Thought you might enjoy the read regardless.
