It is remarkable, but hype'ish.

The achievement is the genetic injection. Not the method of injection. This parallels stem cell research. Instead of coaxing the stem cell into the kind of cell needed, the skin cell is genetically modified (GM-tech) into the cell type needed.

Unless you are repairing something adjacent to the skin, like veins in a limb, the cells have to be delivered to the organ site. They glossed over this. For example, thy had to harvest the new nerve cells from the skin and inject them into the mice brains. Delivery will have risks.

Also, the innocuous phrase "immune surveillance" needs more explanation. This is autologous, so no issue of rejection, but somehow the growth rate has to be controlled or you will get overgrowth (tumors) of the new cell types.

ScienceDaily can be so bad at framing articles. Instead of making the GM-tech clear, and talking about how you grow you own replacement tissues, they focus on the chip that does the gene engineering, and downplay the tricky relocation of the cells to the target organ.

Do they hire non-stem people to write these stories?

Actually DB that's not the case at all. And it is quite a remarkable achievement. A well, Science Daily did not 'write' the article. They are posting the press release.

Regardless, the term 'immune surveillance' is not innocuous. As with all transplants, an issue faced by stem-cells is rejection as they are not derived from 'our own' tissues. Therefore MCH expression is different and so on. These would be our cells. Vetted by our immune system. The combination of it all is what makes the process quite remarkable.
