That's amazing. I am so happy you're getting your life back. It may be the right time for the baby, it will be so great for you to be able to focus on doing what you want, and not on your health. It has been a long time since you've had that luxury. I have thought about the ostomy nurse career. I think a nurse with an ostomy would be awesome. You would definitely have an advantage, both in knowledge, and in understanding the emotional aspect of mentally preparing for the surgery. I loved my ostomy nurse, she was so strong and positive. I would have never thought about that as a path if I hadn't been through all this. It would just be so much schooling for me unfortunately. Are you almost off pred?
Yes I agree with you that nurses with ostomies or who have had ostomies have a lot to offer to ostomy patients. And there is a shortage of ostomy nurses, from what I've heard. I have a BA in communications, and actually had started taking classes--prerequisites for nursing school. I completed anatomy and physiology courses (A&P) in 2013 and was top of my class. Then my UC became very active, we moved, and I got caught up in infertility treatments/pregnancy/parenting. I just need a couple more prereqs and then I can apply for nursing school. There is a time limit (like 5 or 7 years?) and then I'd be required to re-take my A&P classes, which are very difficult, so if I want to go the nursing route it'd be best to do it soon so I don't have to waste time and money re-taking A&P.
I am down to 22.5mg prednisone and weaning 2.5mg per week. My IBD Specialist and CRS said to reduce by 5mg every 2 weeks, but 2.5mg per week seems manageable--I still have withdrawal symptoms and it still sucks, even in small increments. I take several supplements including cal/mag, krill oil, vit D+K, VSL#3, EZFE iron, and a prenatal. I just ordered a new supp which is a methyl-B complex and it has extra pantothenic acid (B6) which is supposed to help the adrenal glands. I'm hoping that with time the supplements will help me heal and replenish my depleted vit/mineral stores. Then I can consider a pregnancy.
Thanks NSSG!
