How did you guys decide on Cornell vs. other NYC area hospitals for your surgery? Not that I think I'm close to surgery...just curious.

Do you live in the area? The main reason that I chose NYP Cornell is that my GI (who I follewed from
mt Sinai) moved there.

The problem with NYC surgeons is that many of them and the best ones don’t take insurance. The chief surgeon at NYP Cornell who was also a CR surgeon accepted my PPO plan. He was super qualified and has a surgerical technique named after him. My GI who I trust said that if he or his family member needed surgery he’d go to this surgeon so that was good enough for me.

I’ve stayed at both mt Sinai and NYP Cornell, NYP is far superior in comfort and atmosphere. They built a new floor about 10 years ago for CR/gastro surgeries.

The real reason to chose a hospital is for the surgeon and the 5 hours that you’re on the operating table. Everything else is secondary.

My GI just moved back to Mt Sinai, which I’m not too happy about but I don’t expect to need to stay at the hopspital anytime soon.

Cornell had good reputation. My Gastro on Long Island recommended either Mt Sinai or Cornell. Met Dr Shukla on 1st consultation in city and liked him right away. Saw another Dr here on Long Island at North Shore. He was ok. Went with my gut feel

Yes I live in the area. I had always heard Mt. Sinai was very good and hadn't heard much about Cornell. I'm glad it worked out for you guys. I've heard Mass. General is good also, which is a reasonable distance but not ad close as NYC for me.

Cornell(N.Y Presbyterian) was good. Surgery which is why u go there went fine. No complications as far as job surgeon did. Seemed like nurses didn't have set way to do things. I was told one thing by one nurse and different thing by another. After being told I was going home yesterday if I could pee was then told yesterday morning that they wanted to keep me bc of loose stools. Why didn't they work on my loose stools Thurs and Friday days 3-4 of me being there?? I wasn't happy and I let them know it. Told them at 9am I'm leaving by 12. My surgeon called and he understood me being annoyed. I told him I have been through all the dehydration crap with this disease. So I'm home. Eating. Drinking and sleeping. Wasn't sleeping good in hospital. Wheelchair never came after waiting 30 mins so I walked down. That's not good. Think it's never going to be perfect.

If you don’t mind me asking, which GI doctor do you see on Long Island? I also live on long island and I’m not too pleased with mine. Thinking about switching at some point. Are you happy with your current doctor?

Have had my gastro since 1986-Robert Bartolommeo senior Dr at Gastroenterology Assoc They just bought building in Uniondale where they have there offices and also they have Lond Island Digestive Health Center where they do Colonoscopys. Check them out.

Those would be your surgeon’s orders. The nurses can not make a decision, they can only follow the surgeon’s orders, some of them may have been speculating.

The surgeon and his team talk everyday about your condition, blood work and progress; they may change their minds along the way. My belief is to stay as long as necessary and not to rush out of the hospital.

I think it depends what type of surgery that you need. If I recall, you have fistulas? I’d always make a decision based upon the surgeon. If I ever need my pouch repaired or removed I’m going to NYU to this guy. /nyulangone.org/doctors/1952337040/feza-remzi . He was the guy that everyone went to at the Cleveland Clinic when they needed help with their pouches, they traveled from all around the world to see him.

I like NYP Cornell. I think BBUC would agree with me, she hated staying at Mt Sinai too, were she stayed for a flare but went for surgery in Philly.

1905 on first full day I was there nurse told me after I called that I had to change bag myself. Now I had never done that nor was I told to measure it. Found out about measuring after I dumped it in toilet. No one from surgeons team or nurse told me about emptying bag. Little lack of communication. I think waiting til Saturday to decide to keep me was a mistake. Should of worked on stools before Saturday. And there's no doubt I'm in better shape then when I left yesterday. I can balance food and drink intake better at home bc I have better choices. If u don't like what they bring me at hospital u might go hungry til next meal

I was referring to discharging and medications as your surgeon’s decision.

I don’t think they let you change your bag in the hospital. There is an ostomy nurse that changes patients ostomy appliances, when she wasn’t available they had the regular nurses change them and some were better at it than others.

Also, just keep in mind. The first couple days they expect lose stool because that's normal. After a certain while it no longer becomes normal......hence, they may not have been concerned about the lose stool Thursday and Friday but by Saturday when it was supposed to be no issue anymore and it still was that's when they wanted to look into it...

1905 I meant empty bag not change bag. Sorry about that. Bull I was told Thurs and Friday that as soon as I can pee I could go home. So my mind was excited when I finally peed. They took all excitement out of my mind Saturday morning. They never discussed with me about stool before Saturday. That's a mistake on there part. I'm a contractor. I have to communicate with my sub contractors to make sure they can set there schedule and work crews so everyone is happy and everything runs smoothly. Drs team is supposed to make my life easier. I hold them accountable to communicate everything with me which includes any possibilities. Many patients are little shy bc they don't want to let's say seem pushy. I ask a lot of questions even though I don't understand everything about surgeries etc. it all worked out. I'm doing good at home. Thanks guys
