Is th is a flare up or should I seek Dr. advise.

In the last 2 weeks I have been having the urge to go often, but when I go nothing really comes out most of the time. It has been 5 years since I was Diagnosed with UC. I had severe case and was worried about making it through at all back then. I have been in remission for roughly 4 years 6 months. I do have blood in my stool albeit not like when I first was diagnosed but it is there and so is the filmy watery mucus.

Do I need to call my Gi, or will this pass soon. I am still and always have taken my meds everyday for the last 5 years. I am taking Apriso. 4 pills every morning, was just hoping someone in here could give me some advice. I also have been having left side pain as well as left side flank pain. Thanks for listening.

call your doc and request some butt meds to go along with the apriso -

I appreciate it. Enema's is that what you mean. I had many when I was going through this years ago at the on set of the UC. Just worried about the idea of full blown again. I have lost my appetite recently again don't want to lose all that weight again. Thanks

Yes it's a flare. Unfortunately, we all flare eventually, even when we're religious with our maintenance treatment. Best to catch your flare early and treat it promptly, rather than wait until you have a raging fire of a flare to contend with... Call your gasteroenterologist and ask for a stool test for infectious causes, and a test for inflammation such as a fecal Caloprectin stool test (or CRP blood test).

What you describe is known as tenesmus, that annoying feeling that you gotta poop, and nothing or at most only tiny bits come out. Super annoying! Caused by rectal inflammation from UC flares.

Ask for a prescription for mesalamine retention-enemas (rowasa/pentasa/salofalk). As they treat rectal inflammation well.

I was thinking I was just never going to have to go through this again. I was worried about it, because I was so sick last time. I lost 45 pounds and I looked like and felt like I wasn't going to make it. I pray a lot.
Thank you for your response. And I have tensmus ,because you explained it exactly like it is happening.
It really is a little Scary for me. My Gi will want to have a colonoscopy I am pretty sure. I'm trying to keep from that happening. Thank you

more than likely your next (or possibly current) flare will be less severe than the first - but to ensure that happens, you really do need to push for some butt (yes, rectal wink ) meds while you potentially wait for a scope - honestly, the longer the delay the better chance for more intense symptoms -

No two flares are alike some funsized, others moderate, and others worse still. Generally speaking, your flares are much milder and shorter when your maintenance treatment is appropriate.

Maybe some enemas for a short while or even a course of Uceris steroid might lets your regular meds get back in control.

Not a lot of people get 4+ year remissions. Hopefully, with care, this flare will be nowhere like your last one.

I understand avoiding scope It is uncomfortable and costly. But in a couple more years, it will be recommended that you have a scope every year or two to check for cancer. People with UC for 8 to 10+ years are at much higher risk of colon cancer.

I want to Thank you all for the encouraging words this week. Got in to see my GI today and of course it was just as you all said. He put me on a new dose of prednisone and as soon as I can feel better a colonoscopy I was due. It has been 4 years so I guess I was one of the lucky ones. Thanks again. Pat

and btw, prednisone is the DEVIL and should be avoided unless absolutely NEEDED !

Yup what Troubled Turds said above. Mesalamine enema would be the first line of defense here. Unless there are details that we don't know--I would save the Pred for the really serious cases or if unresponsive to other meds. Even steroid rectals would be a better choice. I also gotta give a sheesh to your doctor as well.

I believe your right about the prednisone, Tuesday I had asked them to phone in the mesalimine enema told me they wouldn't until I saw them first ,which was more than irritating, then once I got to the Doctor he was gone and had a Nurse Practitioner who I had never met. Uncomfortable, so this is what I got after asking for exactly what you had told me to ask for.
Today I'm jittery as a cat. Can't sleep , feel like I'm on 20 cups of black coffee. This is not what I needed. Calling back Monday.
