entyvio colonic perforation

Been told that I can't have entyvio due to me having a colonic perforation

I'm to be given Azathioprine instead then yearly colonoscopy

The perforation self healed but the Dr worried entyvio might cause problems

Anyone else heard of this and how long will I have to wait before I can go onto entyvio.

That just doesn't sit right with me. They're both immunosuppressing drugs, and I am not sure how Azathioprine is better under that scenario? There must be more to this story, you sure you got it all from your doctor?

entyvio a biologic, and the fact it was a quick phone call, I go on the 26/10 to meet him.

I know entyvio works strictly on the bowel while Azathioprine works over the entire body.

Is one more effective than the other

What are your current symptoms: how many bms a day?, any urgency?, and pain or blood in stool? I'd get more information from your doctor before deciding, because as described in your top-most post, what you said does not make sense.

Entyvio is from the 3rd class of UC meds, biologics. Azathioprine is from the 2nd class of UC meds, immunomodulators. Asacol/lialda/mazavant is the 1st class of meds, anti-inflammatory mesalamines.

So entyvio is the strongest of the two medications. Azathioprine will take about 3-months to work. Entyvio will take 2-3 months to work.

My guess would be that your doctor was worried about the possibility of periotinis/sepsis. If either did occur you could quickly discontinue the immunosuppresent and hopefully recover immune response. However if one occurred near a dosing of a biologic you would be stuck being immunosuppresed for several weeks which could lead to increased risks associated with dealing with the periotinis/sepsis.
