Surgery Scheduled for this Friday

V I agree with you but any family member should know what is going on and what patient can or can't have. All u have to do is ask. Not easy but patient is priority. This wasn't a cut on the finger thing. Dad should know better

That's what I thought. Your thoughts on NYP steered me to them. I have been in many hospitals many times and had many nice roommates But I liked Dr Shukla and the fact u have your own room sealed the deal. Being it's a big surgery with big recovery I wanted to sleep when I wanted to and move around at my own will.

He’s still there but only does surgery on crohns patients. He has a crohns surgical procedure named after him. I don’t think he does as many surgeries as he use to. I’m not sure when he stopped operating on UC patients.

Looks like I will be going home today! My pain is so much better now. I can get in and out of bed and walk around with almost no pain. All I have left is for my ostomy nurse to put on my new bag, set up home visits and supplies, and take my drain out. Things are just so much better than before the surgery already. I feel so much more healthy and free.

I'd get as many different samples you can get from the ostomy nurse. As every stoma is a bit different and might require different waffers, might work better with different appliances, etc etc. There's a bit of experimentation to it all, to get the right mix of what plays nicely.

Hospital gave me Hollister and I stayed with it. Worked fine for me

Two piece coloplast worked best for me. I used barrier wipes on the skin to protect it from the frequent changes. I also liked the barrier rings they seemed to really help reduce irritation around the stoma. I would also turn the bag sideways during the day and wore a stealth belt. I could never figure out how to tuck the bag into my pants and Get it to drain. Maybe if you wore loose pants and suspenders? Sorry, I’m way to vain for that. The belt just felt like it was supporting the bag more and I felt like I could be more active. They are a little pricey, you could probably use an ace bandage or a wrap and have the same result.

Thanks for the advice! I've been liking my hollister one so far. I do like the two pieces and the snap on part. I haven't had any leaks or irritation. The only thing is that the bag does seem a little bigger than I really need. I ordered some samples from coloplast and convatec so I'll see how those are. I'm planning on mostly wearing tights and stretchy dresses and skirts for work, so I don't think a bigger bag would be too big of an issue. I guess I would have to get a wrap and turn the bag sideways to wear it with any of my current pants. I'm determined to look darn cute with my ostomy

I think every person who has an ostomy for a while, likes certain things about one product and other things about another. I always loved the hollister wafers, but the bags were so long and I am petite. The convatec and coloplast bags were better, the tails folded under, but the coloplast wafer is always plasticy on the skin and harder. The convatec is a happy medium on the wafer, but the wafer is HUGE, I would have to cut it down. It was more comfy for me than the coloplast wafer though. Hollister makes a bag called a mini that i had on hand for if i went swimming or something. They wouldn't make sense for regular wear because they are too small. there are also closed end bags that are a bit smaller and could be used for one off situations, but you an't empty them so it's a bit awkward. Coloplast makes a 'midi', which is a smaller size and probably better for petite people. I loved wraps though too, and dresses/skirts are your best friend with an ostomy. No one will be the wiser. I did wear mine with pants. I would wear higher waists, and high waist underwear and place the bag inside. it worked well for me. I don't like when it started filling up though and I had fitted clothes on. I always worried it would look like a bulge. I am sure no one noticed though. You will look cute, I wouldn't worry too much, we are so much more critical of ourselves than anyone else would ever be.
