Hi i developed osteoporosis in my spine after 22 months on prednisone at the age of 35/36. I was taking a calcium and vitamin D supplement every single day in that period. Of the 22 months, 6 months was at 5mg and most of the rest of the time on 15mg. So not mega high doses. I have to take another drug (biologic) now to reverse it as far as possible (which IS possible, especially before menopause if you're a woman). I do weight bearing exercises, especially making sure i walk at least half an hour a day to stimulate the osteoblasts. I have no outward symptoms of osteoporosis. We discovered it when i took a bone density scan at my new hospital after 18 months on steroids. The ideal protocol is that it should be done already every 3 months on prednisone. My previous hospital didn't bother and I pay the price for that now.
Yikes that is a worry. I’ve had one bone density scan done in the last 2 years on steroids, about
1 year ago. Thankfully it showed my bones were in pretty good shape at that time, but I’m going to ask for another one as it sounds like I’m way overdue.
