It definitely makes things more difficult with UC. So many additional things you have to think about. Didn't you evacuate during a previous hurricane? I hope you won't have to do so this time. I'm sure you are worried about your family on the east coast. Will be thinking of you, and hope all will be well.

What a good memory you have, yes we evacuated 2 years ago, bad decision. Plane loaded with 14 wheelchaired Thyphoid Mary and Bob's seriously close to death, headed to Denver. We never got out of our hotel room due to respiratory infection from hell. We were healthy when we left home and so sick in Denver I kept worrying about husband, sicker than me. When we finally got a plane back to Florida I drove him directly to Urgent Care (weekend so his doc not available) and he had bronchitis, got respiratory treatment, many weeks to recover, lost a lot of weight, we missed going to his only niece's wedding. I was sick too but not as bad as him, he was seated next to woman who looked near-DOA. Who could've predicted that?

The problem with leaving south Florida by car is the interstates get overwhelmed and you are in danger of being in a less-safe place than staying home, can't be sure gas is available. That happened with Texas brother in Hurr. Rita. He turned the car around with young family and went home because it was unsafe travel.

Addition to my hurricane history: I grew up in Florida and like many had "no big deal" attitude about hurricanes. But after looking at those childhood years hurricane history turns out that was a very quiet 2 decades hurricane-wise, much stronger hurricanes now and much more frequent.

Some things even Florida people get wrong (my Facebook peeps): yes you may be out of power but worse (to me) is loss of toilet and water. Turns out that when the electric "lift stations" have no power I have no flushing toilet. Doesn't help to have a bathtub full of water if you can't flush. I dealt with this after Hurricane Wilma, almost a week with no toilet use in our home, no electric, no cable, no water. Can you think of worse horror for UC person than no access to toilet for almost a week? We went to a motel several towns away, another bad story by itself.

People that disparage "poor people" who don't evacuate are idiots in my opinion. It's not just poor people, it's people with jobs they'll lose, people with older parents who don't want to leave or can't, people of all walks of life who like me think "where is safe to go?" because getting on the interstate is not that safe and Florida is a huge state.
