Surgery and Kidney Stones

Had 3 colorectal surgeries in 2018,just had kidney stone surgery last Friday.Dr [urologist said the fact that colon was removed could prevent kidneys from flushing good].Had another trip to ER last night bc of stone on opposite kidney.Been a rough week,kidney stones are beyond pain

3Time, I feel you. Unless someone has ever experienced that type of pain, there really isn't a good way of explaining it to anyone. As others has said, drink a lot of water.

Guys think about this-colon removed-body retaining less water-kidneys need water to flush them clean so stones cant form-having colon removed definetly would increase chances of kidney stones-lucky me and us

I found out today that folks with IBD have less oxalate consuming bacteria in their guts that help break down oxalic acid, which is what most stones are made of. So when we eat oxalate foods, a lot more of it goes into the blood stream. How messed up is that?

I just had kidney stone surgery and I'm living with a ureter stent. It's hell. Total and complete hell. The stone pain itself woke me up in the middle of the night. I was screaming and thrashing around, then puking. It was like a scene from the exorcist. I know it might sound funny but really it was like the 9th ring of hell. The nurse at the hospital said she would rather give birth to both her kids all over again than have the one kidney stone she had.

It took me 3 days to get surgery thanks to public health care. It was free at least, but still... living with that kidney colic for 3 days was insane. They gave me lots of morphine but it only sort of helped. In the ER at one point I actually told them I wanted to die and I was serious.

I thought IBD pain was bad but if IBD pain is a 10, kidney stone pain is 100. The stone I had was 6mm which isn't the biggest but it was lodged right in my ureter.

I'm still trying to figure out what might have caused this stone. Sure, dehydration. Maybe eating too much meat, since meat is one of my only safe foods in IBD. Not sure. I will do whatever it takes to never have a stone again. Seriously, I feel traumatized! I have never screamed so much in my life!

Now I wait for pain to come back. All quiet now. Kidney stone pain is so bad you will go unconscious or puke. Worst possible pain u will ever have

Champ, I also had a horrible hospital experience. Want to hear a crazy story?

Day one, rushed to ER for kidney pain. Right away they assumed it was my GI because of my flare and called the GI team. They requested a CT scan and quered "IBD", then started talking on and on about how I have bowel thickening. I kept telling them that I was there for kidney pain and not my IBD, but they kept focusing on my UC! It was infuriating. After two hours of being there, my kidney colic stopped. They kept me overnight but then sent me home without a word about my kidney!

Two hours after getting home, my stone pain started up again and I took an ambulance right back to the ER. The same paramedics arrived and wondered *** the hospital sent me home. They did another CT scan and compared to the first. Turns out the first scan showed the stone clear as day, but because they were focused on my IBD they ignored it. Malpractice much? The radiologist himself came to apologize.

They booked me for surgery. Took almost 4 days of waiting in agony to be seen. The reason is that even though stone pain is severe, it's not considered life threatening... so I kept getting bumped. You know what though, I was reading online that a blocked ureter can do kidney damage eventually, so it's not exactly NOT severe?

One thing happened in care that was REALLY bad. They forgot to give me prednisone. 36 hours went by and I started to go into adrenal crisis. IBD fever came back, lots of bleeding. The nurses acted like it was this big mystery. My mother had to drive all the way home, get my prednisone, and bring it back to me because the idiots at the hospital weren't delivering. It was scary!

This is "the best" hospital in Vancouver. What a joke!!

Finally got my surgery after days of waiting. They put a stent in that ended up being worse than the stone, and my GP had to pull it out early. It was causing bleeding and all kinds of problems like possible infection. The day the stent got taken out, I got more colic pain and ended up back at the hospital for morphine and IV push fluids to pass the stone fragments. Complete hell, I tell you! I had one ambulance ride a day for 4 days while these bloody stones passed!

Are you in the USA, champ? Canadian health care is the pits. Yeah we don't pay out of pocket for it, but we pay for it in other ways... like with pain and suffering!!
