Kidney stones

I suffered the passage of a series of kidney stones in the early 80s. The first one was six weeks following the birth of my child. I would endure many natural deliveries over one kidney stone. They didn't have stone busters back then so they made me drink lots of beer while on Morphine.

Sorry, sounds horrible. I know as I had one kidney stone in my late teens, it was the most severe pain I had ever felt up until that point of my life. Why? I barely drank liquids back then (maybe one glass of water the whole day, dunno stupid teenager who wasn't thirsty I guess). Ever since I drink like a fish. I sip on tea all day at work, no repeating those not drinking enough prob. Rather be over-hydrated more often than not :-p

Van look at my post,just went thru worst week of my life.Pain will make you unconscious or puke your brains out.Just had stone surgery Friday and got another stone Monday.Being i dont have a colon anymore and less liquid is absorb for kidneys to filter then i could be in for trouble if my diet isnt right

So I guess there's no connection between IBD and stones?

UC and Kidney stones go hand in hand. lol...ive had three...last one surgery to get it out. My Urologist said something about having UC makes stones as well?!

Just passed a 4 mm kidney stone 2 weeks ago (took about 12 hours to pass and the pain barely relented even for a few minutes). Ended up having to go to the ER to get pain relief. I actually passed the stone while I was there into one of those mesh/filter thingies.
The nurse told me to save the stone and have it analyzed. Apparently for some types of stones, you can dissolve them with potassium citrate. The CAT scan showed about a dozen more stones lurking in my Kidney waiting to wreak havoc.

Just a coincidence that 2 years after I had colon removed I get first case of Stones??

I didn't look up anything about surgery, but it makes sense if you're dehydrated that your risk would go up.

I just looked that up. That sounds pretty crazy that you get it from the soil!

The infectious disease doc I saw today had an interesting take. He thinks that my body's immune response to the valley fever is also kicking up my colitis symptoms by overcharging my immune system, to the point where I had to go on Prednisone, which is then allowing the VF to spread. Obviously we need drugs that target the immune system in the gut, instead of shutting it off everywhere.

Yes, it is a very delicate situation. This is the first flare (in the 18 years I've had U.C.) that didn't respond completely to prednisone, so we were looking at biologics. The Valley Fever was found when they were doing the routine pre-biologics testing, which basically rules out biologics at this point.
While I was waiting to get in to see the infectious disease doc, my U.C. went into complete remission with just the pred (after about 35 days @ 40 mg). He put me on fluconozole (anti-fungal) with the instructions to slow taper pred. The fluconozole will stop the VF from reproducing, and if I can get the pred down below 20, my body will start to kill the existing VF in my lungs. They will recheck for VF in 3 months.
I'm really not sure what would have happened if the pred didn't get me into remission.,
I asked them about Vedolizumab since it is gut specific, but it was like I was speaking Greek or something, just got a blank stare. He did mention the TNF blockers are the worst when it comes to VF because that is the exact way your body kills off the infection.

Arizona isn't the best place to live if you have IBD. Valley Fever is always lurking around and when you have to suppress your immune system because of a flare, it can get you. Mayo tells me they have several people every month just like me who get it due to prednisone or other drugs that affect the immune system. In fact most of the Southwest susceptible to it, including Central California, New Mexico and Southern Texas.
