Hey there,

Has anyone here had an oral manifestation of UC or Crohn's. Because it's possible that's what I'm going through right now and it's quite scary. It started a week ago with a small, slightly painful spot of white above my gums. Dentist thought oral thrush. But it progressed pretty quickly and my whole mouth had canker sores, white film covering my gums, and few more of those white spots. Also my lips swelled and I looked like a monster. It's all very painful.

Went to a bunch of doctors: primary, urgent care, allergist, GI, dermatology and finally got an oral biopsy in dermatology. Still waiting results. They think it could be pyostomatitis vegetans or some type of herpetic outbreak so I guess we'll see. Just wondering if anyone had anything similar happen to them. It's somewhat debilitating and causing me anxiety, which is not helping. But prednisone has helped some.

Sorry that you have this perplexing & painful problem. Yes, IBD can bring on oral complications. Crohn's patients are susceptible to canker sores, especially. Some Rx meds can also cause oral problems like thrush. Have you consulted an IBD subspecialist gastroenterologist? A dentist well-versed in immune responses pointed me in the right direction in late 1990s because I have recurring periodontal problems + oral bone loss. Best wishes for you to find a helpful DX + solution ASAP! / Old Hat (39 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Sorry you are having oral problems along with UC.
Not sure how much help this suggestion will do but sharing incase this will help.
Try brushing the cheeks and gums with salt.
Salt kills bacteria and reduce the gum inflammation.
I have lichen planus inside my cheeks and it comes on and off. So whenever i feel it is coming back I add salt on tooth brush and nicely scrub /brush the cheeks/tongue and throughout inside the mouth . So far it is working well.

Hey thanks for these replies.

If I don't get an answer from this biopsy then I'll def look into a dentist who specializes in immunosuppressive diseases. It's taken a real toll on my body, mostly because I'm on this liquid diet and I think psychologically, it's tough. The pain is not THAT bad.

I'm interested in this lichen planus. What sort of symptoms did you have initially with it? Again, mine were like little white spots of puss I guess then film on my gums and cheek. Then lip swelling and canker sores.

Could yours be of any allergic reaction? I ask because of the swollen lips symptoms.
Canker sores - B complex could be of help.
For film on cheeks - Try brushing those parts with salt.

My symptoms are very mild with small white circles on tongue and rough small patches on cheeks. To begin with -these will be very small and hard to notice - but cheeks I could quickly catch being rough.

These are my observations and try outs so far: Sharing in case if you can make any connection:

If I miss taking my iron tablets for 2 weeks or more- The symptoms slowly shows up.
Vitamin B complex supplementation helps to stop it spreading.
Scrubbing with salt generously on tongue/cheeks and all hidden areas of mouth quickly makes a difference.

I have no input other than sharing my dentist suggested peroxyl mouthwash for a bad (likely UC caused) canker sore years ago and it sped healing. It provides mild pain relief as well.
