Salofalk - Mesalazine suppositories. Help!

Hey! I’m newly diagnosed and I recently started using Salofalk suppositories. I’ve now started to see a bright orange (almost neon) liquid when I have a BM or expel gas. Has anyone else had this when using these suppositories?
Spoke to an IBD nurse today and she said that it “doesn’t sound alarming” but that she’s “never heard of it before”. Very comforting...
If anyone has any personal experience of this, please do comment. Thanks.

Do the suppositories have an orange or amber coating? I’ve never used those so am unfamiliar with them. Canasa suppositories have a white waxy coating and a liquid oily liquid will often be expelled first thing in the morning from that.

When are you seeing this in relation to using the suppository? I suspect it might be the melted suppository mixing with a small amount of blood or stool (or both).

Thanks for the responses! The suppositories are completely white - almost a waxy feel to them. My first 10 days on them were fine, but now this orange liquid has appeared. It’s whenever I have a bowel movement and then sometimes when I pass gas. I use one suppository a day.

I really wish my IBD team were more supportive. It takes days to get a response and when I do, it’s not very helpful (like today).

In your experience, how quickly should suppositories stop the appearance of blood? I was told it should happen a few days into using suppositories, and it did. However, today the bloody mucus returned. I’m new to all this so I have no idea if it’s a minor setback or a flare starting again.

Hmm, are you on any other meds? I have never been able to stop bleeding with suppositories alone. You my need to up to retention enemas and or take an oral 5-ASA. My experience is that it takes two weeks of using them to stop my bleeding. The orange mucus may be a sign of continued inflammation.

Just suppositories. It’s two weeks now and I seem to be going backwards. Thanks for the info. I’ll try and get hold of the IBD team and talk to them when I can.

You need the enemas...4g dosage for treatment, and I suggest asking for a low dose of oral mesalamine as well.

The orange isnt from fhe suppositories...was it an oily orange substance? Ive had that sometimes in the past when flaring...i was thinking maybe food or too much fat in something I ate. Have never figured it out...i dont use the suppositories.

It is an oily orange substance. I’ll speak to the IBD nurse team about more meds etc. They were adamant I don’t need anything other than suppositories due to it being proctitis.
They don’t have a phone helpline at my hospital, and their email response time is 5 days, so it’s all a little stressful. As I’m sure everyone here understands too well.

Suppositories are not enough to treat UC in my understanding. Most I see with just supps have had their UC spread upward...having the entire colon and rectum covered is more of a control considering the powers that be don't know if your UC will stay limited to where it is.

What coutry do you live in?

What supplements are you taking?

I have used Salofalk 500mg suppositories for 8 years now. I believe I've had a similar experience but it's not an orange color, it's more yellowish, instead. It mostly happens when I go to the bathroom and notice it on the toilet paper, or sometimes expeling gas, but it's a very small amount. I would not worry about it if it's a small amount.
