I’m sorry for the multiple posts with all the questions, this is all new to me and I just need some answers/reassurance as I am literally getting nowhere with my consultant.
Leaking mucus - is this completely normal for UC
Some days it’s minor, just a little bit. Either brown or like a red tinged colour
Other days like today it’s horrendous, anything I do I just feel wet, run to the toilet and find myself covered in it. (Sorry to sound gross) what causes this? Any ideas on how to help?

You're flaring...plus just had anal hemorrhoid surgery.
Since you cannot use rectal meds, I dont know what to suggest. You could try pepto bismol maybe? Probiotics?

You are flaring with ulcerative proctitis or u. colitis! Brown-tinged mucus has excrement mixed-in. Red in mucus = blood. Why you feel wet many times is because mucus also comes out if/when you expel gas. It's a very nasty symptom of mucosal inflamation/ulceration, and especially hard to wash out of soiled underwear! We used to have many posts on this topic during my early years on HW forum. Members who had joined before me already had given ironic nicknames to the offending leaks: "shart" = mucus containing crap, and "blart" = mucus with blood. *** It seems that you need to affiliate with a gastroenterologist who understands IBD and reliable treatments, and to drop your present "consultant" who isn't helping you to get the proper medication. You're in the UK, right? That's one of the countries where UC patients have access to Rx mesalamine retention foam, besides the liquid retention enemas. Probably you need a script
for those now, but if your symptoms worsen you'll need steroid med to heal the ulceration. Definitely pursue better medical care! / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Are there any particular probiotics you would suggest.
Yes I’m in the UK. I’m in a daily battle to try and get booked in for a colonoscopy, 4 different doctors I’ve seen over this last week have all said j need it but my consultant isn’t responding and I don’t really know who else to turn to.
Yes in the UK. I remember having the retention foam when I was pregnant - really struggled to keep it in. Don’t know if that’s normal.
Im back at the hospital on Wednesday, will try and push for this.
Just finding it so hard at the min, I’ve got 3 young children and I’m spending my days cancelling plans and laying on the sofa too worried to go anywhere.

Ask your GP if she can refer you to another consultant?

Your rectum is inflammed. Depending on how inflamed it is then that will determine the medication to treat it. They make rectal foams, suppositories and enemas in 5ASA and steroid versions.

This member has said all of the drs are saying she must wait 6 weeks from the hemorrhoid surgery before anything can be done. I suspect this will apply to any rectal meds that everyone keeps telling her to request. Like Quincy said, she has 2 issues going on, flaring & healing from anal surgery.

Thank you for all of your suggestions, I do appreciate it.
Straydog is right though, I am at the mercy of a consultant who will not see me until 8th June (8 weeks post surgery) should have been 6.
I have another appointment this week with the surgical team this week where I’m hoping if I push enough they will do something. They examined me last week and said I’ve healed well from the surgery so they done see any reason not to get me a colonoscopy and start treatment however, the consultant isn’t budging.
In the meantime, has anyone got any advice on probiotics, diet etc that may help? I’m at a loss as I can’t see any correlation on what I eat and how bad my symptoms are

Is it sometimes happening while you are sleeping?

You could be prescribed oral mesalamine...push for that.

No thankfully nothing is happening while I am sleeping. When I get up in the night to go for a wee I do sometimes get blood or mucus come out but it’s not stopping me from sleeping etc

You just mentioned having used retention foam during pregnancy. Then were you diagnosed with UP or UC? If yes, were you advised to follow-up with gastroenterological surveillance post-partum? If not and you had no record of UP or UC within reach of the consultant who sent you to hemmie surgery, that is likely the reason for your present problem with inflamation flaring. Hemmies can result from childbirth or UP/UC, but a patient with any history of UP/UC should be treated with special attention to Rx status prior to undergoing rectal surgery because those IBD conditions can flare anew at any time. *** In the meantime you might get some relief from leaking mucus by avoiding known irritant, gas-inducing food & drinks plus wearing disposable padding when you have to leave home. It's extra hard to manage a flare while mothering 3 young children besides so your doctors/consultants should give you adequate care as soon as possible. If you did get a DX of UP or UC in the past, then it would seem that they could give you oral mesalamine now when your surgery prevents use of rectal med, as Quincy suggested. Hi old hat,
So in pregnancy I had these symptoms (not as severe) pretty much the whole way threw. I pushed at about
7 months to have a sigmoidoscopy which is when they found procitis. They wouldn’t look into it any further until once I’d had the baby but they did prescribe me the foam to try and help with the inflammation.
I had to wait a while post birth to be seen by which point all of my symptoms had disappeared and the hemmoroids weren’t even causing me problems. Due to this I didn’t really question or push for them to look further as I stupidly put it all down to pregnancy and hormones.
I was booked in for hemmoroid surgery back in Feb which was cancelled due to my husband having covid. Coincidentally the exact weekend it was cancelled was when my symptoms as well as the hemmoroids returned. As they flared it was assumed these were the cause.
Even when I went in for my surgery last month, I explained to the surgeon my symptoms and he tried to say it was ibs. I then explained the whole background to him and he looked up my notes and said he will have a look around.
After surgery he said there was procitis and they will need to investigate further. I have been given no treatment for the procitis though which I dont really understand as they did last time.
But I would definitely say my symptoms have got a lot worse post surgery so I’m guessing this has caused a bigger flare

I agree with the suggestions to get on oral mesalamine ASAP while you are waiting for the ok to use rectal meds. The inflammation may have spread further and the oral meds will help to keep it from involving your entire colon. Ask your docs to write a script
for you and don't let them ignore you.
Good luck!!

So had an appointment with the hospital today. They have put me on the list for the colonoscopy so should get an appointment for the next 4-6weeks. I asked for something for the inflammation in the meantime and they have prescribed me mesalamine (forgot ask what form I will be having it in but picking them up Friday). In you’re experience how long did it take to notice an effect (appreciate it may be different for rectal and oral meds)

2-4 weeks, as I recall. Take the oral med with a full glass of water then be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. Glad that you finally convinced the medical staff to move in a more helpful direction! / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Let us know what you're prescribed. It's a relief they finally made that effort.

I collected prescript
ion today and they have given me salofalk suppositories to try twice daily. Anyone had good results with these? I remember having them when I was pregnant and can’t say I noticed a great deal but maybe didn’t give them a try long enough

Better than nothing...how long is the rx for and do you have refills?
Use one at night and then in the morning after the majority of your bms.

I’ve been given 2 weeks worth and have to use one in the morning and one in the evening.
What I’m leaning is now black, is this normal?
Must admit suppositories do take abit if getting used to, I’ve spent most the day being conscious that it’s leaking out

I've had good luck with the supps. They do let out purple and black color and cause you to clean the toilet more often because they are waxy, but they may help you a ton. They helped me a lot for a long time. Fingers crossed for you.
Sadly, with this illness, I have asked, 'is this normal?' way too much. The reality is, that there is a large range of awful but normal stuff associated with ibd. What you described was pretty typical for my flare ups. Just lots of messiness and unpredictability.

Brava, Notso! You totally "nailed it" RE all the stuff that can be associated with IBD. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)
