UCers who have inflammation above the rectum usually have to take oral med to stay in remission; that's my situation because I've had flares involving my descending colon and sigmoid, too= left-sided UC. If your consultant is recommending use of Octasa, and it's an oral anti-inflammatory, then he may be thinking you'll need to take that to achieve and maintain remission. (Because proctitis can move upward to involve more of the colon. Liquid retention enemas can reach the sigmoid, so a stretch of mucosa above the rectum, but inflammation higher up requires oral med.) That's why Quincy posted above about the need to take oral med. You could start a new thread here with subject "UC Proctitis-- what med to take to stay in remission?", and then you may get more responses from forum members with mainly rectal inflammation to-date. *** At this point try not to worry about possible side effects from oral med; more options are available now that most of us can take with no or minimal side effects. Generally, it's safer to take maintenance med than to risk future flares that could involve more of the colon or all of it (=pan-colitis). / Old Hat
