Urgency is a symptom of rectal inflammation as is tenesmus (which is the feeling like you need to go to the toilet, but when you actually go, nothing comes out). Frequency not so much - my sisters with crohns have to deal with frequency during flares and neither of them have rectal inflammation. I will disagree with others about rectals being a must. It's like trying to put a house fire out with a water pistol.
Urgency is definitely a symptom of flaring...but there is a difference in how urgent and less urgent when not flaring. My butt definitely doesnt wait in the mornings because I never hold it long...because I want it done asap. I may pay for that in the future tho as I get older by the day.
Please don't use terms like putting out a fire with a water pistol, because that is really not true re rectals. What's the point of arguing against a treatment that is extremely helpful...tried, successful and works? No one suggested anything other than adding them, and really it's cruel in having patients suffering longer than needed.
Many here use them as an adjunct. And remember that there are different types, mesalamine or steroid meds, different dosages, different prescribed timings and all can be used in combos.
