For me, the final step was living a half-life for a year. Mesalamine did not get me to remission so I spent most of that year on and off prednisone. I tried all the diets and food elimination and that didn’t work. My “safe” foods were very few and truly it didn’t seem to me that food affected my disease except that some foods were worse than others. I mean that the disease severity was what it was, and while food could affect it negatively, it didn’t affect it in a positive way. I couldn’t hardly eat in public because I didn’t want to run to the bathroom. I was really weak with no energy and below 100 pounds.
Have you had a colonoscopy and how was your inflammation? Long term inflammation can lead to cancer. After my year and longer of inflammation I did end up with polyps and one showed signs of pre-dysplasia (I can’t recall right now the exact term used).
I was also extremely depressed at the time. I was ready to get well and it felt like going on biologics was my only option. I was really scared of doing it but desperate to be well.
