I got an intestinal amebiasis back when an iodine-based treatment (Diodoquin) was being retired and Flagyl had just entered the marketplace-- so the internist who got my lab test results put me on the wrong med, Tetracycline. Then I felt worse so I submitted to upper/lower barium x-ray series. By that time I started to expel bloody mucus randomly, which led to my getting mugged in a public restroom. Then I sported a black eye for nearly a month, and finally agreed to c-scoping because the barium series hadn't resolved anything. The scope with biopsies showed that I still had amebiasis + severe lower left ulceration so it took a Flagyl Rx then steroids to set me on the path to healing from my early-stage miseries. I had actually self-DXed correctly on both conditions, then finding a truly helpful and affordable gastroenterologist to treat them successfully proved to be an agonizing journey. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)
