Remicade couple of EZ questions I need help with.

Hi - I am changing from BCBS of MA to BCBS of IL.  I am trying to confirm coverage so I know what to put in my AFLAC account.  The benefits administrator has asked me a couple of questions I have no clue about.

What is the dosage you would be receiving?  I know this depends on my body weight but I think I've seen something around here posted that you receive so many ounces per body weight???

When administered at the physician's office or hospital, are they housing the medication or do you have to pick it up from the pharmacy and then have them administer it?

You'd probably need to ask your GI those questions- the standard Remicade dose is 5mgs/kg, which is what they usually start you at. As far as the med delivery, that would depend on where you get it administered- I go to a hospital, so they use their in-house pharmacy. But I know for my insurance, if I were to order the Remicade myself, I'd have to go thru certain mail-order pharmacies.

Give your GI a call regarding your dose. When I get my infusion at the hospital infusion clinic they have it sent up from their pharmacy when I get there. They won't send it up until I am present due to the cost of the drug and they say they can't send it back down if I didn't come in, which leads me to believe it's perishable. At around $6,000 a dose I don't think it's a mail-order item either.

Remicade is perishable. Once they mix it with the saline, it MUST be used w/in three hours.

I believe my dose is 5 mg per kg. The higher dose is 10 mg per kg. You'll need to ask your doc which dose you will receive.

I get mine from the in-house pharmacy. As Meesh said, the pharmacy won't mix it until I show up at the infusion center. I use a center at a local hospital.

Mine is 10 mg per kg but I think I started on 5 mg per Kg -
