Hello,
I have had colitis for about 9 years now and it has never really gotten better except a couple times on prednisone. I have tried all the meds and nothing works. I have been trying alternatives and still nothing helps. So anyway, i had my last colonoscopy over 2 years ago, because I have been reading about how it is unnecessary how often doctors ask you to get it and how invasive it is. But should I be worried? My parents and doctors keep pushing it on me.. how often does everyone get one?? I'm nervous about cancer obviously, but it seems so bad for your system to go through a colonoscopy. And for what.. every time they just tell me I have colitis, which I know! Any opinions/experiences would be great. Thanks!

Cancer is one of the main reasons to have the colonscopy. Colon cancer is easily treatable if caught early enough. Having Uc raises our risk, of course it depends on severity, length and duration. But the standard time table is to have one every year or two years after the 10 year mark because that is when colon cancer risk becomes greater. I am on year 17 of having Uc and because I am over the 10 year mark, I get a scope done every 2 years. If I had a family history of colon cancer or if I was having more issues then I think I would be going in every year.

I had my first scope done in Nov of '08 when i was diagnosed.  I then had another one done on Jan 26th to check for improvement.  I was told by my GI that i most likely wouldnt have to have another for a while.  I dont really know how long a while is though???

I have one every two years also.
