New research on UC identifies genetic defects

I believes that there are several causes of UC and genetics may be one of the causes.

In countries like South Africa and India colitis only became prevelant when US fast foods started opening shops in those countries. I am a strong believer that US fast foods may be one of the causes of UC

I'm Indian, and I believe both genetics and diet have a role to play. However, I have reason to believe that my grandfather and uncles in India had UC (Grandfather died in 1981 at the age of 80). Never ate a burger in his life. I think it was common for people to just live with it. He never went to a doctor for this or most other things.

Thank you for sharing your diversity of opinions. I will assimilate your information and draw my own conclusions. I think that is the purpose of forums like ours.

I have to admire and respect both of you on how you took control of your situation and brought yourself into remission, without drugs. Congratulations. I too am trying to find my own path.

there is evidence that autoimmune diseases arent as prevelant in 3rd world countries. Part of that, is thought that its because they are exposed to more bacteria and their immune systems know how to work correctly. We are so clean, and so concerned with killing all germs that our bodies dont learn how to fight bad stuff correctly.
Im sure that the type of food does have something to do wtih health problems.
I read an article about a study, where a large group of asian women were followed, from when they lived in their home countries, they then moved here, and within like 5 years or something, their health had declined and their risks for all kinds of diseases had jumped. Due to the lifestyle changes.
Regardless, if anyone knew the cause of UC they would know the cure.

I am firmly convinced that a non-specific viral infection kicked off the UC in me. I had no gut issues at all. Then about 6-7 years ago, I got sick with what the doctors thought was mono but blood tests did not show it. Before they could go for another round of tests to nail down the virus, I started getting better. A year later, the virus hit again but I recovered much more quickly. However, after that 2nd bout is when I slowly started developing what I now know as UC symptoms. It was slow ... one day I could handle coffee and sodas and the next day, not ... then it was being in pain eating some popcorn at the movies and yet the subsequent times being fine ... it was so gradual that I kept on putting off going to the doctor because I thought it was IBD ...
