I am on colazal 3 3x a day. I also take a prenatal vitamin with iron, and probiotics. Last time I flared there were a few days when my ankles and feet got so swollen. I am in a flare again, and they are swollen. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi
Swollen ankles in the tissues not the joints can be a sign of low albumin in the blood which is common in ulcerative colitis. Along with the blood that you can see in the loo you also loose the fluid(plasma) that the blood cells float around in. Over time this can lower other ingredients in the blood like calcium/protein/albumin/vitamins. You may need a blood test to check how low things are because it is really difficult to heal if you are missing all the goodies needed to build new blood cells and rebuild your colon.

Thanks for the answers, I think it is in the joints and the tissue both. This disease has such random symptoms, it's hard to tell what's what sometimes. Time to get more blood drawn :)

Could this be why my feet are swollen? I don't think I'm flaring though!

I have the same thing right now. I was diagnosed last year and haven't had a flair up since, until my current 'episode' kicked off a couple of weeks ago....
It started with a left 'mega-ankle' which was swollen up to a good inch of inflammation on both left and right sides. This eventually went down, though bruised out in the process and was quickly followed with the usual bowel symptoms. I didn't realise that joint inflammation was a symptom of my UC though, so when my right ankle then swelled up even more horrifically I went to A&E suspecting a torn achilles. It was only after a couple of specialist came down to have a look that they linked it to my UC and explained it's all par for the course (sigh). They put me on crutches, gave me a boot to stop me bending it and take the pressure off which helped - but as soon as it had gone down it's now swelling up again. The whole show has been ongoing for 2 months now, and the swelling has moved around both ankles and both knees, currently back on the right ankle. The weird thing is it seems to be particular parts of the joint that swell each time, and yet it changes each time too (my ankle was the sides, then the hell, and now it seems to be a lump on the outside edge at say 2 o'clock).
It would be great to understand how you are all finding it? Sometimes it's so painful I can barely walk, and any sort of exercise is completely out of the question. Is there anything else I can do, any way to bring the swelling and pain down? It's so embarrassing too because I'll go into work and be relatively fine, and then go to stand up at lunch with a massive limp! People must think I'm crazy.
(Taking Pentasa 4 x a day, and started Prednisilone 40mg a day for 1 week before tapering)

I get swollen feet and knees ALL of the time because of prednisone. It can be pretty miserable.
