Prednisone and Pregnancy

I started Pred. in January and my son was born in April. We had no problems with it. I was also on Asacol. I was on Pred. and Remicade while breastfeeding. Again, no isses. My son is very healthy. He is 11 months old and has never even had a cold!

I was on prednisone throughout my last pregancy - no problems. I started Remicade after I gave birth so I don't know about that. Congratulations!

I just found out that I am pregnant too and due in November-we are very excited as well.  I am just wondering how are you doing with your UC?  I am 6 weeks in a flare and worrying about if my baby is ok.

Oh, its sooo nice knowing someone whos pregnant , and has UC. I havent been to the doctor yet but we are going in two weeks.  Also due in Nov . (figured out by my last period.)  Taking prednisone 20 mg right now and trying to taper. Flaring, having unbelievable urgency, ughhhh, hate it soooo much. The fact that I cant eat fresh fruits and vegetables is very frustrating for me. Went out a bought a prenatal vitamin at Whole Foods. I did some research on it, and its supposed to be one of the best, (its enirely food based.) They are called Rainbow LIght Complete Prenatal System. Supposed to take 6 pills a day, soooo not looking forward to that, but if that is what I have to do, its a small price to pay..They are supposed to be easy on the stomach from all the reviews I read about them.. So we shall see,.I will start tomoorrow and definitely report back.

Hi ladies. I am 16 weeks pregnant. My doctors would prefer that I stay off pred. if possible but also told me that a short course will not hurt if needed. They also think that keeping me as healthy as possilbe it what is most important for the baby. I think that as long as your dotor knows you are on pred and is watching you carefully you should be fine. Congratulations!

I take Women's One A Day Prenatal. My doctor told me any prenatal that does not upset your stomach is fine. Your doctor can also prescribe one if you prefer. You really should already be taking a prenatal if you are not.

Just wanted to support those who are pregnant and flaring and/or taking meds. I flared in my second tri with my first baby and was worried about the effects of the bleeding etc on the little one. No worries, he was born to term and healthy. I took asacol through out and canasa/pentasa and cortifoam when I flared.

I am currently pregnant with my second and so far not flaring....well, loose stools but no blood. Because I have "been there, done that" I feel way more relaxed and want to send some of that calm to you first time pregnancy women. There seems to be no clear cut answer as to how bad a flare has to be before it effects a baby (believe me, I tried to shake the answer out of my docs during my first pregnancy!). However, those little beings are conceived with a strong will to live and it takes pretty severe hardship to hurt them. You probably feel awful while they float around happy and healthy.

A tip about prenatals and flares. Because everything moves through you a bit faster when you are flaring it may be a good idea to use a prenatal that is in powder form (ie. a v-cap) rather than a tablet - it is more easily digested. I suppose you could also crush a tab. I also take extra folic acid just to make sure i get enough. The added benefit is that in some research folic acid has been shown to reduce the incidence of colon cancer due to chronic inflammation from UC.

about pred and cleft palate. I asked my high risk preggo doc about that and it is thought to slightly increase your risk of a cleft palate to take pred in the first tri but as far as I remember the risk is minimal.
