Sessile Polyps

When I was first diagnosed with UC they removed 3 polyps, now I have approx 20 to be removed ..is this common?

I don't know, but there are a few on here who have pseudopolyps associated with UC. I would think it depends on what the pathology report.

There was another person on here lately who had a polyp disease in the colon. Different situation.

I really haven't done much research on polyps since I haven't had any, but I think doing indepth research and having the results of your pathology (and doing more research ) will allow you to have questions and make decisions accordingly.

How did the doc see the now 20 more you have?

Hi Quincy..Thanks for the reply ...the polyps showed up during a sigmoidoscopy. They are going to do a colonoscopy to remove them

Are the new ones as well as the previous ones in the sigmoid area? where exactly?

What were the results of the first pathology report?

I hope all goes well and that the report comes back benign.

When are you having the c-scope?

The original polyps were located during a colonoscopy when I was first diagnosed, these ones were found during a sigmoidoscopy (scope inserted 55cm) ...they are all over.  I have another remicade infusion on Monday and a meeting with my specialist around the 27th so will probably get results then (because I have been flaring badly they decided to wait until I felt better before deciding when to do the colonoscopy.  Thanks for your well wishes Quincy......

Sounds like a good plan....

This is only a question....could a med like Remi exacerbate the growth of them?

Are sessile polyps related to inflammation?

Are you on any 5ASA meds at this point? and maybe the rectal enemas could be of help?? just grasping at possibilites.

It's unfortunate you have this added stress. Would you consider to have your colon out.

What were the results of the biopsies regarding the first ones? normal/abnormal/dysplasia..etc?

A UCer doesn't automatically need to undergo colectomy just for having polyps. Sometimes inflamed mucosa looks like it has polyps, but after healing the tissue smooths out. As long as the polyp is small enough to remove with the scope tool and the biopsy report comes back clean, there is no cause for alarm. Sessile polyps are pretty common. My gastro has said that the really dangerous polyps are the flat lesion kind. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I have been thinking about surgery...the Remicade is at this stage my last hope. It does says in the report if the polyps are adenomatous/dsyplasia to consider surgery and my specialist has suggested I start thinking about it. Sessile polyps are flat Old Hat, hence my concern. I have a meeting with my specialist next week so I guess I will be asking a few questions and will come home with more answers..thanks for replying Quincy....

I agree that the over concern about polyps can be exaspirating....but the fact that UC is in the mix and you're having an increased abount, to me...is at least a concern.

The reason I state this is that you are already on the big-gun meds...at the top of the scale.

Lots of questions, more answers, and a hell of a lot of research is the way to go. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with having a colon out if one's mental distress, consistent flaring and increasing polyps are the direction one is going.

Again, and I realllllly stress, this is MY perspective. Statistics mean squat since it cannot predict YOUR subjective situation. Wait and see is OK, but it all depends on what expense and the ultimate eventual decision if other things don't work. Must be my age as well....my tolerance for dealing with stuff has waned since the future is less time than is my past.

If you have sessile polyps, they would likely look like a Hershey's kiss. This is not the type my gastro was referring to. In any case, I wish you positive reports at your upcoming consult. about a yr ago there were pro articles on a new medical device designed to remove the serious flat-lesion polyps; it's called a helix hydrojet. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
