Is Cimzia normally prescribed for UC??

My sons GI suggested starting him on Cimzia if he didn't respond to steroids, Lialda or Antibiotics? Is this a normal drug used for UC? From what I have read it seems to be more for Crohns. For those that have used it, what were your results? Is this basically a last resort type medicine? He mentioned that if Cimzia didn't work then we may be looking at surgery. That surprised me and I told him that surgery would be a last resort. It's strange how diet is never mentioned, only drugs and surgery.

Some of the IBD-subspecialist gastros have been trying Cimzia on UC patients the past few yrs. Prior to that cyclosporine was administered as a last resort before surgery. There were a couple UCers posting here on the forum when I 1st joined whose colons were saved by cyclosporine treatment in-patient at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC. After that they were able to switch to 6-MP & other more common UC meds. Gastros who know their stuff are anxious to get IBDers off steroids because of common long-term side effects on other body organs. That's why they try meds like Cimzia. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Cimzia can definitely be used for UC but its strange that your doctor didn't mention one of the more common biologics for UC like remicade or humira. I wouldn't say Cimzia is a last resort drug. It's on my list of drugs down the road but hardly my last.
