Question...UC with Jpouch?

Not sure if anyone knows that answer to this Question:

Once someone has had JPouch surgery, do they still have UC in the section of the rectum that was not removed with the removal of the large bowel? I was getting mixed information on this. Since having UC increases a persons risk of colon cancer, does a person still have to have regular screenings for the section that was left and reconnected to the Jpouch?

he is doing well.. thank you for asking.  Takedown surgery was in March.  spent the next few months getting acclimated to the Jpouch.  He has had some other GI trouble that ended him back in the hospital in June (thought he had a bleeding ulcer)  but he is doing well.  hope all is well with you!

Hi There, I was hoping to hear good news when I saw your post.

I'm so glad to hear he's doing well.

I'm no expert, but I've read some posts from some who have had the surgery and some say that they do indeed still have UC in the small section of the colon that remained to attach the jpouch.

Perhaps the jpouch forum can be more informative?

I think that most CR surgeons strip the rectal cuff in order to prevent UC from continuing in the rectum. I think I've heard of some surgeons NOT doing this, and I also seem to remember suebear specifically talking about this from time to time.

re: rectal cuff....Definitely something to ask about before surgery. It would suck to have to deal with it continually after the surgery/take-down.

My surgeon recommends going every year for a quick scope of the pouch. I just had my first one last month and it took all of 2 minutes. Other doctors say having a scope every two years is fine. At least it's quick and easy....No prep involved...not like those awful colonoscopies! Glad he is doing well! :)
