Fish oil enema ameliorates colitis

See the problem that I have with this study (or similar studies) is the colitis is induced so the inflammation causing entity is there for a short amount of time, only to induce colitis, and then the factor is not in the 'system'. Thereafter these rats are treated, in absence of inflammatory substance. The results show amelioration !!!

Here we have a case, where the inflammatory markers are ALWAYS there and you are treating the patients. Agreed that the meds that we take, keep these markers/substances in check, but the rat study can not be extrapolated to humans and say that it will work out the same.

Second is, even if we agree for a second that it does help, how much are you really use for human, ~60ml and that too pure enough. Is it really sensible treatment?

I think the mouse models where they have genetically altered the mice to be missing a key cytokine in inflammation chain, or added a gene producing a human protein - it think these studies have the most value for studying the genetics and processes of UC.

the studies with DSS colitis, can help learning about inflammation processes - but may not extrapolate. DeltaFroce said it very well.

they do have some mice, missing il-10 or il-23 or both (I forget) that spontaneously develop UC at one week of age. (sucks to be those mice.) I think this will yield insight/advances for the UC that sometimes presents in very young children. I think it is almost a different kind of UC, because the etiology is very heavily genetically predisposed. Very good for early childhood colitis research - but maybe not for me.

it is interesting that the fish oil was given as an enema. one concern with ingested fish oil is that it oxidizes easily and produces harmful free radicals. I am assuming that the enema retention is temporary, and there is no oxidation stress.

I understood the major concern about GMO-corn was that it encourages the use of Roundup, which then is seldom completely washed off. Trace amounts of roundup may be caustic in the GI track. It has been shown to be caustic to tissue in test tubes, but studies with humans are inconsistent regarding evidence of caustic damage to tissue. (Some are concerned some of the research was done by GMO-corn developers, and may not be independent.)

Any way, I think they could get purified corn oil, containing only the PUFAs they wanted and nothing else.

but Mike, that case report was fish oil with Vit-E, and there are already accounts of Vit-E stopping bleeding.
