Hi All:

I was given Pred for a 14 day period (40mg per day) and it worked really well. My UC flare symptoms disappeared after 1 day. This is only my 2nd time on Pred; the previous time I was on it for about 6 weeks and it worked well. I didn’t have any side effects either time being on Pred.

I am mostly concerned that I might experience some steroid withdrawal symptoms from my most recent time on Pred. It’s been 4 days since I last took the Pred. Do you guys think I am in the clear as far potential steroid withdrawal symptoms? Do those symptoms usually come about immediately after eliminating the Pred? Thanks so much.

Consider yourself lucky if you've had no symptoms from the pred taper. It is probably because you were on pred for such a short time.

I receive symptoms (increased # of bms, increased urgency, sometimes hints of blood, and looser stools) from tapering pred the day after reducing my dose, and those symptoms last for 2-3 days. I have been reducing my dosage by 5mg, once a week. Given, I have been on pred much, much longer than you (since early January 2013), and the longer you are on pred the harder it is to get off of it.

I think you are free and clear, at least for now. The worst is usually during the tapering process. You may not be totally out of the woods though. Prednisone can bring on bone loss and diabetes, among other things, that you may not notice yet. Hopefully those won't happen to you since you didn't have any other symptoms. They are also more related to long term prednisone use.

If you've been fine with no pred for four days, you should continue being fine. But the latest you're supposed to be able to quit cold turkey is about a week in. I think you're lucky. Go buy a lottery ticket.

Thanks everyone. I was just surprised my Dr. gave me a 2 week course with no taper, since I always thought anything longer than a week would require some sort of taper. Luckily my flare wasn't too bad so things were able to get under control quickly. Been 5 days with no Pred and I still feel fine, so I'm pretty thankful for that.

You just weren't on it long enough to get side effects or withdrawl symptoms. Lucky you. I bet you snapped at a few people though, maybe without realizing it.
