Hello,
Has been a while since I posted. Some oldies may remember me :)
I'm having a mild flare. I had 3 bm's yesterday, one normal when I woke, one semi formed in afternoon then a very loose one after dinner.
I decided to start salofalk enemas last night. Have only used them once before a couple years ago but didn't think they helped and thought they might have made my symptoms worse so stopped. Had been ok since then.
So far today (it's 7:40am) have gone 3 times!!!! Most I've gone in the morning in years. It's all been loose and this last was basically liquid.
I did retain enema all night.
Is this the enema coming out? I don't remember this happening last time.
Am I intolerant to the enemas?
Should I do another one tonight?
I have a GI appt this Thursday.
Worried and scared.

If you retain the enema for a complete hour, that would be good. If you went less than 3 hours after the enema that is probably the enema coming out along with your BM. However when you do take the enema, make sure you are able to keep it in for at least one hour to be effective.

Some people do it right before bed time. Others do it right after their morning BM. You need to experiment and figure out what works best for you,

Thanks for the response. I did it before bed and retained it from 9:30pm to 6:30am. Then I had my morning bm's that were liquid.

I wouldn't suggest you make the decision that you're sensitive to them as of yet. I sometimes get liquid bms from the Salofalk enemas depending on how bad flaring a am.

Use them nightly till Thursday for sure...you're able to retain them, which is a huge thing.

Have you wavered on the salofalk oral at all over the recent past? or stuck with that dosage?

Keep us posted how you're doing and how your appointment goes on Thurs.

You could also ask the doc for the Salofalk suppositories...I believe they're 500mg and/or 1000mg. Ask for the higher dosage and maybe use them twice a day (make sure the doc makes that for the RX since you might not be able to get refills if you use more than the prescribed dosage as per the pharmacy.

I also have salofalk supps here at home. I will continue the enemas until my appt which is friday( thought Thursday but was mistaken).
I don't feel like I'm flaring too badly. I only had those bm's this morning and fine the rest of the day.
Hmmm, bah UC!
I have continues the salofalk oral dose and never missed a single dose however- have recently realized that I've been taking a ppi at the same time most mornings and that might be a problem for acid and where the salofalk is bring released.
I'm going to spread those out.

Hi...hope no rain for your husband and son during their time here, since most weekends it rains, sigh.

Maybe take the PPI half hour before eating and then the salofalk after eating. It shouldn't interfere, however since the casing is the same as the Asacol, and the PPI doesn't cause the stomach to be the same PH as the end of the ileum.
Besides, you don't take all 9 in the morning, do you?

What ppi are you using? and when did you start it?

Let us know how you do on the enemas. You might also consider to add another probiotic for a while...of course, I suggest the primadophilus Reuteri ;-)

I'm on pariet. Have been on and off for a year or so. I try to take it every other day and am trying to wean off and balance my acid with diet.
I actually doubled up my probiotic last night :)

Pariet is a good PPI. I think it could make a difference with meds that dissolve in the stomach. Take them, however, with food.

Have you taken Zantac before? That might help, and it's not a PPI...works differently.

Good you doubled the probiotic for now. I do when I'm flaring...doubling both at bedtime.

Hope diet changes help as well.

Night 3 of enemas. Yesterday only had one BM in the morning at my usual time ( 30-60 mins after waking). Yender abdomen at times and some left side tenderness too but no more bm's. Took another last night and so far today only my one BM again at normal time although seemed the enema was more mixed in with BM and was absorbed as well. I was up and down all night with my kids :/
We will see how the rest if today goes.
I wonder about eventually going to enemas every other night and the off nights using the supps. Then every third with enemas and eventually only supps every other night.
I'm probably due soon for a cscope so I'll know how much involvement I have then. I think it was about 30cm at last scope in feb 2013.

Update: had a liquid BM around lunch time but it was clear liquid with a little liquid stool at the end. Is this the enema coming out?

Hi...sorry for not answering this yesterday. I read this on my husband's tablet before breakfast but wasn't signed in. Then when i was on again..it was probably on page 2 and forgot. I'm on my phone just reading after midnight and saw it again...so had to answer for sure.

Ok...hard to say what's going on with the diarrhea, because it's still early after starting the meds. Could be the probiotics or food or just by having bms in the morning got your inflamed area more active and just got whatever out quickly.
Hope there were no more during the day.

Regarding doing the tapering and maintenance you suggested...good idea and could work well for you. I would think it depends on your symptoms and how fast you taper.

When you have your period you might have some regression..just don't taper during that time.

Do you take any fibre supplements? They could help with stool consistency.

Thanks Quincy. Anxiety def plays a part in my bowels and when they are active. I've been having anxiety issues lately and have a Dr appt to address this next week.

Today I've had one BM in the morning, pretty normal just a little more mushy from the enema. Feeling some tenderness in my abdomen but that's it.

I'll see my GI tomorrow and report back.

Good to hear. If you are having anxiety issues, using an antispasmodic can help a lot with gastro "hissy fits" to calm them down.

I do use Bentylol (Canadian brand of dicyclomine)....I'd suggest to start with 10mg (worked reallllly well for me for many years). I now use the 29mg, but sometimes I've split them to 10mg depending on how much gut movement and how busy I am. It can cause relaxation of my eyes if I'm not busy.

Hi Quincy,
Had my appt and feeling good. It's a newish GI since mine retired and I must say that I think I like him better than my last.
I did not do an enema last night and feel a lot more settled today. Only one BM an hour after waking. That being said, my GI encouraged me to continue with the enemas for a couple weeks then tapering to 3 times a week inevitably. He said that these symptoms ( loose bm's) are common after enema use. Also that I have good track record with 5 ASAs and that perhaps the enemas were not fully working yet and the inflammation was causing the increase activity even while on enemas. I will continue with them.

We scheduled a cscope for the end of August with the option for me to cancel the week before if my symptoms are relieved since I'm not due until next year.

My blood work perfect and I just had them done last week so he felt confident that this was a bump in the road and the enemas would help get everything back on track.

Hope he's right :)

Hubby and son are there now. Quiet here at home with just the one child. I know you said you don't head out to the fest but any possibility this year?

Hi...good to hear you like your new GI...that's a huge step in confidence and patience ;-) I dread when my GI retires, maybe by the end of this year...he'll let me know in Sept when I see him.

I obviously agree with the doc to continue your enemas until all is good. Then going to every second night for a while, etc. You have a ways to go, hang tough.

When was your last c-scope?

No chance of me going to FF this or any year..lol. Absolutely no interest ever for a number of reasons. But, the weather is great so far, and not supposed to be extreme in any way. It's always a success regardless (so there are dedicated folkies from all over and more joining/volunteering yearly it seems).

The quiet might be good for you to take the time for a bit more rest.

yeah, you're not ready for a scope unless you're getting worse...huge kudos that he mentioned to put it off if you're improving.

Have a good weekend...nice your daughter and you are having a quiet time together.
