Starting Azathioprine while flaring?

I ended up in the ER on Saturday because i just started a huge flare. The inflammation is much higher this time on the right side. I have bounced between Pred & Mesalamines and Enemas to control flares ( last one lasted 9 months and ended in September). I am finally moving on to stronger medicines. My doctor says that he wants to start me on Azathioprine today ( currently taking 30 mgs Pred, 4 Lialda, 2 VSL 3 DS). The thing is I am so nauseous from the cramps when they come I don't want to start another medication that makes me nauseous... He did give me zofran but I am wondering if I should wait a few days before starting? Thoughts?

Yikes yeah imuran (aza) gave me horrible nausea and dizziness. After consecutive days of vomiting I was finally taken off of it. How many mg are you going to take? I started on 100mg and then when I got the symptoms my doctor dropped it to 50mg for a week and I didn't make it past that week but he was going to do 100mg again, but split doses this time. If you have a choice I would suggest maybe asking if you could start at a low dose and work your way up. Not sure if that would help. Taking it with food didn't make a difference for me, but definitely do that because it does help some. Also taking it at night instead might help. I didn't have zofran though so it might not give you any nausea.

Don't let this discourage you from taking it. Lots of people have great success with it. My body just seems to be intolerant to all UC meds with the exception of remicade.

Have you had aza before? Cuz if not, it might not make you nauseous.

I never got nausea 6mp (equivalent medication to aza). Some get nauseous others do not. Take it before you fall asleep to minimize the risk. Good luck,

Andrina there you are! Someone told me you figured out the imuran nausea when I was going through it lol. It just proved too much for me and I ended up going off it but I'm doing fine without it. I think my doctor freaked out a little when I had some inflammation at my last scope and thought the remicade had stopped working. I thought it was just a little holiday flare and I think that's what it turned out to be because (knock on wood) I'm doing great without imuran and I've been off for several weeks.

Talliecat you'll be ok. Just find what tricks everyone has said that work for you.
