Aldactone for Acne and Colitis

I suffer from cystic acne that seems to be related to the degree of flare I'm in. If my colitis is bad, I have and increased number of acne outbreaks on my head! Very painful at times. about 4-5 times a year I also get cysts on my face, needing a steroid shot or drainage to get rid of. My derma prescribed Alactone 75mg a day. He says it will have no impact on my colitis. Obviously I'm a little nervous. I was on accutane 3 times in my early 20's.

Has anyone tired this? What are your thoughts?

I can't believe it, someone has the same thing as me. I also get cystic acne on my scalp. It is mainly concentrated on the back of my head. Very painful. It flares up and then it can reduce for awhile but never goes completely away. I also took acutane about 15 years ago. I can't seem to pinpoint the acne flares with the u.c flares because I don't have flares.I have steady symptoms all the time. One thing that rapidly reduces the cysts for me is to apply colloidal silver to the cysts several times a day. They clear up in a couple of days instead of weeks. But then new ones come to take their place.

I wish I could do accutane. I wouldn't consider it with my colitis situation. I am surprised the DR gave it the OK. I would recommend a low dose antibiotic before accutane.

AZ- The benefit of trying Alactone is that it may also get rid of the excessive hair I have. Even laser hair removal didn't work. My derma says Alatone won't mess with my colitis but I'm still nervous. I think I'll try the colloidal silver on my head though. They are very painful and it makes laying down difficult at times. Thank goodness I have thick hair, but when they come on my chin, I don't want to leave the house! (Geez another reason not to leave!)

It's only in the last 16 months that I've been flaring non-stop that I've noticed the connection with the cysts on my head. Prior to this it was really limited to my face and the odd time on my back.

Thanks for the tip I'll try Colloidal silver. BTW colloidal silver helped with my colitis years ago.

I didn't realize what you are talking about is the same thing as spironolactone. I took it years ago and it gave me amazing clear skin but it took about 6 months so give it time if you decide to try it. It was before I had UC so I can't speak to what impact it has on UC. I did have to quit the drug due to it causing insane thirst. I just couldn't deal with that anymore.

OH, you're talking about spirnolactone, not sure why i thought accutane!! I've taken sprinolactone for my acne, it's a good option,. it's a diuretic so it can make you pee more often but it didn't really cause me any UC issues. That makes sense. I thought your DR was crazy because I thought you were taking about accutane. Sorry, not sure why i thought you meant accutane...
