Antibiotic use for uc

Just got my flex sig done and apparently the remicade/mtx combo is not working so I'm stopping both of those, upping pred to 10 and doing cortifoam once per night. My doc also wants me to take cipro and flagyl until we can get everything worked out for me to start Entyvio. I'm worried that antibiotics will make things worse.. Any thoughts on this? My doc said that antibiotics can play a role in helping the UC.. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts?

I'm currently in a bad flare and on both those antibiotics. I SORTA think it has helped. I started a thread a few days ago titled "newly dx and frustrated" if you want to see my story.
The flagyl is absolutely awful to take and the mouth taste is driving me crazy; people describe is like metal taste, I get more yeasty (I don't have thrush....at least not yet). And the cipro gives me terrible nauseousness. Seems to be kept a little at bay if you take them a little apart from each other. I also had my doctor put me on an anti spasm med.

What's your advice on when I should take them? I have to take the flagyl three times per day and the cipro twice per day I was thinking of taking the flagyl in the morning at eight then again at four then at midnight and then taking the cipro maybe at ten am and pm and I'll be doubling up on my VSL DS probiotic as well. Going to talk to the pharmacist as well. Thoughts?

Flagyl gives me metal taste in my mouth but generally I never found that those particular antibiotics harmed my UC. It's very independent, a lot of people have trouble with any antibiotics. I am sorry that you're not having better luck with the remi :( I Hope entyvio works well for you.

They were helpful to me, although once I did get thrush. I think that I did something similar with dosing: flagyl around 6 am, 2pm, and 8 pm; cipro at like 8 am and 8 pm. You have to stay away from dairy if you eat/drink it with the cipro, I believe. I've always stopped my VSL when taking them, but I did take Florastor with them. Florastor gives some people a bad time, though, so that's very individual to each person I would think.

It's a crap shoot. The doctor is just guessing. They could either help you, make you worse, or not do anything and there's no way anyone, including the doctor, can tell ahead of time. There is pretty much no way to tell until afterward.

I am only on the antibiotics for 10 days, but it's possible I may start the Entyvio this week.  Is it ok that I am on antibiotics when I start Entyvio or should I wait to start when the course of antibiotics is done?   Or does it not matter?  Thanks for the help!

You should ask the doctor but I don't think it would make any difference if you took them both together. Entyvio doesn't work overnight. My guess is he will say finish the round of antibiotics, even if you are starting the other this week.
