Chest Pain and UC Flares

My Son is 20 years old and diagnosed with UC 2.5 years ago and 2.4 g Lialda was keeping it under control. He stopped for about 7 months since it was ok and stayed in remission for another 6 months.. Then a lot happened 4 months ago.. , he got a chest cold, started heavy weight lifting again(chest exercises) and re-started Lialda at 4.8g. Then he started getting chest pain which was very bad. After many trips to ER's and Dr's he was misdiagnosed with pericarditis and had been prescribed indomethacin which is a NASID which made his UC symptoms worse. Since the Dr's thought it was pericarditis he stopped the Lialda concerned that it was causing pericarditis. we now know after many EKGs, Echos, Chest XRAY and Cat Scan that is was not pericarditis and some other kind of inflammation in his bones/connective tissue/ cartilage (costochondritis?? ). 40mg Prednisone was started - after 3 weeks there was still chest pain and bad UC symptoms ( bloody stools ). Since Pred was not working - started tapering and started Lialda to address UC. Within 1 week there was a dramatic improvement in chest pain and UC. All was well during tapering 1wk 30mg. 1 wk 20mg. 1 week 15mg.. with just a little UC(almost gone) and very slight chest pain and some neck pain. Now at 15mg Pred and just about to go to 10mg - the chest pain is getting worse. I guess this can happen while tapering so he is going to try a slower taper..

Has anyone that has UC ever experienced center chest pain and also neck pain?

I'd wonder if it's not medication induced. It might not appear immediately, might be delayed reaction...

Cardiovascular side effects of mesalamine (Lialda)

Common (1% to 10%): Hypertension, vasodilation

Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Pericarditis, myocarditis, pericardial effusion, tachycardia, hypotension

Frequency not reported: Chest pain, T-wave abnormalities, Kawasaki-like syndrome.
