Dear All, when my stool & blood were tested for CRP levels in Dec last year, they suggested that I had a very high level of overall inflammation. Aside from poor bowel movements, I had constant back aches in my lower back. The gastro prescribed preds which may have improved things over the month. However, the backaches are back and I feel my bowel movements are getting worse.
I don't want to go on preds again, unless absolutely necessary. I'm trying to avoid any inflammation causing foods etc. Don't know what else to do.
Thanks and best wishes,
Teacher

Is this signature still accurate for you?
1x 4 capsules, Apriso, Rowasa, prednisone, Align (probiotic), Multi-Vitamins, Tylenol, 1000mg/headaches
I'd try immunomodulators (imuran/azathioprine) or biologics (humira/remicade) next.

Mesalamines such as your Apriso and Rowasa are anti-inflammatory. And there are several anti-inflammatory supplements you can try that are also effective for UC such as Curcumin, fish oil, and boswellia.

I agree with the above posts.
If you are still only on Align as a probiotic, I would recommend looking into ones that have more than one strain and have to be refrigerated. Align only has one strain, does not have live bacteria and has milk as an ingredient. I personally did worse with Align and then I saw that it has milk and a large amount of 1 bacteria. You can do a search on this forum for other probiotics.

OOps, I've edited the signature. I'm not on rowasa and preds anymore (starting Jan).
Thanks again,
Teacher.

Why did you stop the rowasa? If you have a high CRP then you might want to add them back.
Is it muscle or joint pains within your back? Joint pains are a common complaint with UC.

I was on Rowasa for a few months. I guess the gastro didn't think I needed it anymore when the symptoms went away. Some of the pains in my knees are joint pains. But the ones in my lower back are difficult to tell. For instance, I have trouble standing straight immediately when I get off a chair. I can't swing my leg over to get on a bicycle etc. Also, my feet hurt if I stand too long or if I walk too much. It's like I've muscle and joint stiffness all over. Now that spring is near, I'm in for a rocky allergy season which will make the UC even worse.
Thanks very much!

Dear Teacher, as someone else suggested curcumin is a great anti-inflammatory and has been shown to rival Mesalamines for UC too. Bioavailability is the big issue with curcumin products. After trying a few Meriva, BC 95, with some success, I stumbled onto UltraCur and it is significantly more effective for me in managing my joint pain and I am very active. However, be cautious about
trying any supplement when flaring.
