I got 3 round of Vanco in the last year and I'm pretty confident that I kick c. difficile ass last april, finally
Hard to tell, but until the last round I had the feeling that it was still there. C. difficile is really good at hiding in our gut, some people will have it without any symptoms. And yes, sugar will feed it. I experienced it, it gives c. difficile more strenght, which higher the symptoms (fever, diarrea, vomiting, blood,...).
Probiotics is a really really good idea. It will help and from my experience, doctor should prescribed it. It will come to that eventually. But it not kill the bacteria, it is more a protection against it and it's really good to combine it with the antibiotic.
I took and still take a regular probiotic every day (80 billions, mostly bifido). When I was sick, I took it twice a day. I did combine it with Boulardii probiotic which is a non invasive yeast well known to make c. difficile life harder. When I told my doctor I was taking that he said : Keep taking those, it is super important. I took maximum dosage and because it is a yeast, there's no interraction with any antibiotic, so no need to wait 2 hrs after antibiotic. I still take this probiotic too to protect myself from this bacteria that I'm still afraid of and some people online do the same. Better safe than sorry!
Don't forget to wash your hand with soap and hot water for a few minutes after visiting any clinic or hospital. Especially before eating. (c. difficile use a fecal-oral transmission mode to travel)
Antibacterial gel don't work against c. difficile, it just put the spores all over your hands, and unfortunaltely this information is not shared enough.
Good luck! And after two rounds of Vanco, if you get tested for a 3nd time, you can have a FMT (well that's how it works where I live in Canada). FMT is a real good treatment, it works at 90-95% against c. diff, which is much more than antibiotics!
