methotrexate & folic acid

Anyone here on methotrexate injections for ulcerative colitis? Did you find it gave you more stomach issues or less? My stomach has really been bothering me since starting it 2 months ago (more bathroom trips, diarrhea & stomach pain, lack of appetite), but I'm not sure if it's the MTX or the folic acid supplement that I have to take with it.

I'm on what I think may be a high dose of MTX - 25mg per week, but I'm taking the MTX for multiple issues & have been feeling so much better since starting it besides the tummy troubles. I did try switching to methylfolate for a week but that didn't seem to make any difference. My dosage for both has been 1000mcg (1mg pills) daily.

besides that i'm also 5 infusions in on entyvio, and have been on 15mg of prednisone since january, tapered down to 10mg about 2 weeks ago. don't know if i should just stop taking the methylfolate & wait out for a couple of weeks, or if its worth emailing my GI about now.

tried 6mp earlier this year....i'm one of the lucky few who is allergic to it.

i'm on entyvio as well which is for the UC, the MTX is for ITP/hypereosinophilia but doc is thinking it should help with the UC as well since they're all autoimmune. i'm just wondering if the MTX or folic acid could possibly cause stomach issues rather than help them.

Hi, you could try increasing the folic acid. When I was on Methotrexate I took 5g a day of folic acid which my Rheumy advised me to do as it stops some of the side effects of the Methotrexate, (like feeling queasy)

I would definitely try increasing to at least 3g Folic acid, and see how you go, but you are allowed to go up to 5g.
