Hi All

I posted a topic last week regarding sudden diarrhea after being in remission for months. I had no usual UC symptoms and the bm's did not contain blood or mucous. I had thought I was much better and went away for 4 nights this past weekend. My tummy felt rumbly a lot during the trip and I had some urgent bm's halfway through the trip. I had been doing very well prior to a week ago and I still don't see blood or mucous. I have proctitis but none of my usual symptoms. My doc is ordering a bunch of stool cultures etc. but my bm's are not watery but they not formed either. The question is how does UC spread. My last sig scope was in december and I had mild proctitis 5-20cm. The Rowasa has worked along with Balsalazide and I can tell that the proctitis is not an issue right now. So can the UC spread to a place I've never had it if the area that I did have it in is under control? For instance could my proctitis inflammation be controlled but now develop higher up UC without flaring in the original area or does UC spread in an organized fashion? I had also thought the balsalazide would have helped with the higher areas. I've always had lower left side pain with inflammation and I don't have that pain at all now. I just get overall rumbly. Ugh I hate my life

UC spreads in extent when we're undertreated, during flares and when in a simmering inflammation state. So if you're in a remission then you have the lowest odds of it spreading in extent.

but with the absence of blood it seems unlikely to be a flare and more likely an infection?

Unless you've tested positive for an infection then it's definitely a uc flare. The presence or absence of blood doesn't matter. For some blood is the first flare symptom to go away, for others it is the very last.

What have you changed regarding food or supplements?

Are you doing the enemas nightly?

Stool samples are necessary at this point......
Yes, flaring can definitely be without blood. Bleeding happens with more inflammation and friability (fragility) of the mucosal tissue.

You seem to be covered med-wise, unless you are skipping or tapered to maintenance.

When do you get results of the samples?

Hi Quincy

Ive been using Rowasa nightly but I know I am flaring now. I sent stool cultures this morning and I saw the blood clots in the semi formed stool. I used Rowasa last night and I had pain and cramping during the night then had the bloody bm this morning. I am getting another sig-scope tomorrow afternoon. I was on maintenance dose of balsalazide as well. I am so upset and depressed because I was doing so well. I don't know what meds will be ordered next. I guess its still considered a relatively mild flare considering others have severe ones but I have lots of gurgling if I eat and my left side feels like a washing machine. Quincy were you ever in this predicament while on nightly Rowasa???

Hi...no, I only have used nightly while flaring. But I've never gotten worse while on nightly enemas.

It's possible you picked up something, but you mentioned c.difficile in the past, and that might be the culprit.

Hope the results gife confirmation one way or the other.

Let us know about your s-scope tomorrow.
