Fecal transplant - donor with peanut allergy

Hi everyone,
I've been researching fecal transplants for years. I can't seem to find any information/support from doctors in my city of Toronto as many don't know a lot about it yet and are unwilling to experiment. So I just continue to read all the research and glean information from the first-hand experiences of those who have done it DIY. I'm itching to try it on my own but can't even get a doctor to do the necessary tests for my donor.

My major question is: Does my boyfriend's peanut allergy exclude him from being a good donor?

In every other way he's the perfect candidate. Healthy, active, young male. Never had any illnesses, hasn't used antibiotics since he was a child. He's got pristine bowels and has normally formed, healthy stools 2 times a day. We live together and he is very willing to help me with this.

I have read that there are some studies going on to determine whether fecal transplants could help cure peanut allergies. Though I haven't found any conclusions to these studies, it's clear that researchers are considering the fact that a peanut allergy could be caused by a bacterial imbalance in the gut.

His peanut allergy isn't that bad. The one time I've ever seen him have a reaction (he unknowingly dipped a spring roll in a peanut butter sauce without knowing what it was) he was able to calm down the reaction with some benedryl, no epipen required. However, if I were to contract the allergy who knows how sever it would be...

Thoughts?

I am sorry but I disagree, donors should be free from illness, and this is particularly true of conditions such as allergy which have been linked to the GI microbiota.

Ya, I think I agree with you WorriedUCer. I'm not going to assume the peanut allergy is not a problem. I really need to speak with a well-researched doctor on this matter before going forward. I hope it's not an issue because using the person I live with would be the easiest way to go about this. But I'm not willing to take on a risk if the circumstances aren't ideal.

Limey - good luck with the study! I've been following the work mcMaster is doing for years and really praying for some breakthroughs. Unfortunately, or fortunately, my case isn't severe enough for me to be a suitable candidate. I'm about 90% in remission at this point using 5-ASA meds so all the doctor's I've spoken to think I'm better off waiting to see the results of the study instead of participating or experimenting on my own. I'm just burning with curiosity on whether or not this treatment could be the one little thing that gets me from 90% to 100% and allows me to ween of medication for good...

Yes, I used to work at the Centre for Digestive Diseases and I know this was an exclusion criteria for donors. Perhaps they have relaxed the screening since then (I'm not sure) but it seems unlikely, and certainly not something you want to mess around with I'm sure. There'd be nothing worse than contracting another illness when trying to get yourself better from this one. But I do sympathize, having that conversation is such a hard one, it makes only so many people suitable. It used to frustrate me when I was lying in bed feeling awful, thinking about all those healthy people walking around out there flushing it away!

I have the opinion that he probably wouldn't make a good donor. I don't think you want someone with any food allergies.

But why don't you try and contact the CDD in Australia, or the taymount clinic in the UK, and just ask them. Its just 1 quick ?, you should be able to get an answer.
