It'd be the same as with resections with UC (and why they always do a total colectomy and not a partial). You can cut the bad part out and UC only spreads to the remaining "healthy" tissue afterwards. Whatever the cause of UC (autoimmune, MAP, or something else), it will come back even after the bad tissue is cut out (when only part of the large intestine is removed). As the problem isn't the tissue that's inflamed, rather it's another mechanism from/present elsewhere in our bodies acting on our intestine. Whatever it is, it likes large intestinal tissue, remove it all and you have the closest thing to a cure with a j-pouch or end-ileo w/appliance.
As Keith said, if they discover a cure for UC within our lifetimes, then it would be technically possible to grow a new large intestine from the patient's stem cells and then implant it back in and not have any issues going forward. I believe intestinal tissue is actually pretty simple, and would be easier then say growing a heart or kidney.
