The hygiene hypothesis is off-and-on mentioned in regards to IBD/UC. Certainly one of the many things (along with food additives, and many other environmental things as well) that has changed over the last number of decades.

Omg....they didn't swab public door knobs, bathrooms, kitchen dishcloths, transaction machines, cell phones, keyboards, grocery carts or baskets, hospitals, books, grocery ....etc? There are reasons to be aware and wash our hands.
Old theory for 30 years at least.
