Hi
My teen son who has pancolitis (in remission) has wisdom teeth removal coming up and they usually suggest preventative antibiotics and oral pain meds to follow. Im reluctant to have him on any antibiotics and risk his remission (he has done terribly with antibiotics in the past) and I’m also concerned about
the pain meds. Thoughts on which pain meds would be safest on his gut besides plain tylenol? he once tried tylenol with codeine and had horrible reaction so i know that it out.

Hi I've had two wisdom teeth out (pre colitis) and never got antibiotics. I think i did a lot of sal***er rinses to keep it clean. I also did the two teeth separately (several months apart) to minimize the discomfort although obviously that means having two procedures instead of one.

Usually antibiotics are not given unless there is evidence of infection. Pain meds may not be offered since drs have been under the gun about
prescribing. My dentist told me years ago that jaw teeth are the most difficult ones to pull & more prone to cause pain afterwards. If the teeth have grown into the bone this makes things a little more traumatic. No one wants their kid on a narcotic, however, if they are rx'd & your kid is in a lot of pain don't let him/her suffer out of fear. Only a small amount will be prescribed if at all. Look for an ice pack that will wrap around the jaws. Keeping the swelling down will also help with the pain a great deal. The warm salt water is great too, you will be given instructions on when to start doing that.
I hope things go well.

It blocked the "word" that it saw in salTW@Tater, ie, the tw a t.

Now, now, such language as we all know that salt-water is a very bad word. Let's only use natural-spring-water, filtered-water, etc (just kidding of course) ;-) Yeah the forum can be weird about
censoring things at times, I believe beave is correct. Too funny.

That's funny.
I believe my oral surgeon gave me a rinse that was a topical antibiotic and I rinsed with it. There were no pills. For pain relief, there should be a lot of options, just not NSAIDs. I usually take tramadol, but everything makes me nauseous, so I have to take zoloft, or another nausea med. Sometimes it helps, other times it's not that effective. In general I avoid pain meds. He will need them for a few days, so I would request something to help with side effects. Why didn't the tylenol codine work? It should slow the bowels if anything.

The one time he had tylenol w codeine (or maybe it was tylenol w vicodin..i can’t remember) he developed the most intense stomach pain. He was doubled over crying.
I’m gonna look for the jaw specific ice pack-that’s for idea. Are there certain pain meds that are gentler on stomach for UC folks? Like is vicodin harder on stomach than tramadol?

Mom, I can assure you if the dentist offers any pain medication it will be a very mild one & a small amount. Codeine can cause issues for a lot of people. Taking a pain medication on an empty stomach is often the culprit. The best thing to do is to wait & see what the dentist offers & then let him know about
the codeine. A person never asks for a specific pain medication, that sends a red flag up. There is a very good chance you will be instructed to use OTC for pain.
I understand your concerns, this is your kid. But, at the same time try not to anticipate anything. Hopefully the teeth will come out without any issues & the healing will happen quickly.

I would not avoid antibiotics or pain meds after wisdom teeth removal, personally. I only had to take the pain meds for 2-3 days, from what I remember. They gave me Vicodin. I've never had pain meds upset my UC. What kind of bad reaction did he have to codeine?

I read your above response about
the codeine. Did he take it on an empty stomach? Because taking pain meds on an empty stomach will do that to you, lol. Also, if you take them when you aren't in much pain, it can do that as well...(I once took one because i was out of Xanax and felt like i was having a panic attack; I got violently ill).

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, they gave me an IV antibiotic so I wouldn't have to take a multi-day course of oral. Still caused explosive diarrhea, but I recovered.
