I'm in clinical remission. My stools were unusually large this morning and I pushed too hard. I could feel the tear before I even looked at the result. My stools were blood streaked. This is the first blood I've seen in over a year.

Because I'm paranoid about any possible progression, what can I do?

I wouldn't normally use rectal meds for something like this because it's just a tear. Does anyone have some pro tips for tears and fissures?

Back when I first got UC, the first doctor misdiagnosed me as having an anal fissure. He told me to take sitz baths and use stool softeners. I wouldn't recommend the stool softeners, but maybe the sitz baths would help. Other than that, it looks like ointments are sometimes prescribed, but that doctor didn't give me any, and I didn't actually have a fissure anyway, so this response may not be all that helpful...lol.

Mark, I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago. It happens from time to time, actually, maybe 2 to 3 times a year. I don't "do" anything except try to expel stool more slowly the next few times I have a movement because it does hurt a bit. But it just heals on its own within a few days.

I had a second BM later and there was no blood at all, but my butt is sore. I agree that consciously not pushing too aggressively helps. I just get super paranoid that a fissure will lead to infection, leads to inflammation, leads to flare. I have major PTSD about UC flares. Anytime I see blood my day is psychologically ruined.

I completely understand that seeing blood part! UC is traumatizing in many ways.

I had 2 fissures at once when I had UC. They are horrid. Some of the most awful pain I've experienced was from fissures. It feels like squeezing a lemon in a cut... burning, stinging, intense pain while going to the toilet. I'd literally cry on the toilet, pray to the toilet gods, whatever made me feel better. Did you have intense pain? If not, it's probably not a fissure. It could be a hemi or something along those lines. Fissures don't go away quickly and they are intensely painful. If you had one, you would likely have it for a few weeks until it heals. If you saw a little bit of blood once, it's not necessarily a sign of bad things to come. Try to relax and take it easy. You will be okay. If you're really stressed, go for a FCP.

I have no idea

All I know is that I couldn't go one time and I sent my husband to buy miralax. While he was out I pushed really hard and I think that was one of the last times ever that I had firm stool. One month later I found myself in the midst of a flare. How that ended... Well, see my signature.
