Hair Biopsy - UC Flare

Hi Guys!
I have been suffering with a flare for 4 months now. Its been the worse ever. I have started clumps of my hair for 2 months now and its very depressing. Ive lost 80% of my hair and have bald spots. My GI does not have much to say about it.My thyroid is normal and zinc, iron too. I visited a dermatologist and they want to do a scalp biopsy to figure out what the issue would be. Has anyone does this before? Any side effects? Suggestions? Just want my hair to grow back!

Losing hair in clumps and having bald spots could be alopecia areata (also an autoimmune condition). There are some studies showing that AA can be treated with xeljanz, which is also a (very successful) treatment for UC. This might be something worth looking into.

You weren't and aren't on steroids?
Have your hormone and cortisol levels checked as well as adrenal.
What other meds are you on?

I would probably have the biopsy. But, in an inconspicuois spot. As well....have intensive blood testing that will show autoimmune, etc.

Normally I’d say that sounds like alopecia areata, but most dermatologists can diagnose it without a biopsy, so maybe not. I would get the biopsy done.
