I’m on my third day of IV solumedrol 60mg. It has definitely helped, the frequency has been cut in half, I went 8 hours today without a poo, although they are still watery and bloody. Far cry from the oral 40mg pred I was on for a week before though. They want to put me back on that oral dose tomorrow. Their logic is that I got my first remicade dose a few days ago and I should be fine off the IV steroids. But, I can feel the frequency and cramping start to return at night so I think it’s the IV steroids keeping things at bay. I really want them to do at least another two days of IV steroids, maybe even at a reduced dose of 40 or 50, before sending me back home on oral. I really want to make it to that second remi infusion. That’s basically my last hope before I get surgery. Any thoughts?

Depending on the cramping you might be helped by an anti-spasm medication.

I’m not normally the worrying type but I’d do everything that I could to avoid being in the hospital for surgery right now with the corona virus spreading. Spend an extra day or two now and hopefully you can avoid 7-10 days in a hospital recovering from surgery later on.

It seems dumb that they are taking you off the I.V. steroids if you are responding well. Often while flaring, not much oral pred gets absorbed as things whistle through your digestive tract. Have you made it clear that you would like to continue the I.V. steroids?

Sometimes discharge has to do with insurance. When I was hospitalized for pancreatitis induced by Balsalazide Disodium, I was flaring. Going 8 to 10 times. The IV settled me down some. They only kept me for the pancreatitis timeline, and sent me home on nothing but oral prednisone. I was quite frustrated as my GI at the time even had me on a taper after only 2 weeks when it was almost a month before I started Humira. I didn't communicate well with my GI partly because I was upset about the hospitalist yelling at me. I hadn't hardly eaten in a week, and had then been iv only for two days. I don't think I was thinking clearly. I think all you can do is ask your GI if he/she would consider giving you another day or two.
