Just another quick one of you wouldn’t mind, they’ve prescribed me Prednisolone 5g is that a high dose?

Is this the ‘Pred’ people go on?
I see another steroid Prednisone are these the same as Prednisolone?? (Slightly different spelling both used to treat UC).

I would still get the stool test...before you start the pred.
Can you not get steroid enema?

Most side effects are temporary and dose-dependent (in other words will get less as you lower the dose). There are long term risks if you take pred longer than a couple of months.
I personally hate pred because I got stuck on it for 2 years, mostly at relatively low doses (5-15 mg), and ended up with osteoporosis as a result. I always make a point of mentioning this even though a lot of people don't experience this, the risk is there. Its a good idea to take a calcium and vitamin d supplement at the same time.

Prednisolone, Prednisone are very similar. Your body metabolizes Prednisone into Prednisolone. Taking Prednisolone saves a step.

Pred is nothing to be afraid of. If you're pooping 4-6 times a day or more than that then pred's warranted, do listen to your gasteroenterologist and continue taking it as prescribed.

Yeah we hate the side effects. They're temporary.

I got stuck on pred because although it made me feel great, as soon as I went below 20mg I started flaring again. So then we tried one drug after another in order to wean me off the pred...some of them take 3 months before you can assess if they're working and adjust the dose.I have not been on pred for nearly 2 years now. Bone loss can start as soon as 3 months so it's always good to be aware and if necessary get a dexa scan to check the bone density (this is where my former hospital messed up. They never did a scan. Only after I changed hospitals they demanded it right away)

Hope your keeping well. Just a quick question I’m hoping someone can help with please 😊
I’m taking the Pred since Thursday and feel good on it and the last two nights I’ve been able to retain the enema again (wohooo) however I’m still having 2/3 loose stools first thing and then I’m perfect for the day/night. When I say loose stools it’s practically diarrhea I know it’s normal to have loose stool after taking the enema but does this eventually even out and become formed over time? I’ve been having loose stool/diarrhea since before Pred.

I’m taking both 4g Saloflak enema and 3g oral granules aswell. I find when I use the suppositories or only half of the enema a few nights back my stool wasn’t as watery.

Should I just stay at the full enema and eventually things will start forming? Just interested to see what you guys did.

Thanks Quincy for your input. Should I go on the Saloflak suppositories instead at night for the next few days? In April/May of this year it was limited to 15cm of the rectum (proctitis). Hopefully it hasn’t spread too far..

I should say the enema’s were working okay for about 3 weeks and then the stool got a lot more watery!

You also need to get on oral mesalamine as well. I don't agree it's a one or the other...full coverage throughout your rectum and colon. It can take months for bleeding to stop depending on how high and severe the inflammation is. Once bleeding stops...inflammation is still there that needs healing. As wdll....at this point, you can also add a suppository during the day.

Stay the course fairly...it takes as long as it takes. Easy for frustration and the feeling of no hope in sight to set in.
