IBD is a body-wise systematic disease with a prevalence for presenting in the bowels. RA is a body-wise systematic disease with a prevalence for presenting in the joints. Psorasis is a body-wise systematic disease with a prevalence for presenting in the skin, etc. The point is that all autoimmune conditions are body-wise conditions and if anyone tries to tell you otherwise that is just wrong. Each condition will have a pr
opensity to give the majority of symptoms at a certain
location but extra manifestations could and will be found elsewhere in the body. For instance the population dies in general of heart conditions with probability 30-35% but for those with RA that probability is close to 45% which shows how the extra burden of the disease affects the body in general.
If you are having joint issues these need tests to see if they are a direct manifestation of your IBD (your IBD does not need to be clinical active in the bowel for a manifestation elsewhere). They could also imply some other underlying autoimmunity as those with one condition are 4 times more likely to present with another than the general population. IBD joint issues tend to be flitting, assymetric, no morning stiffness and little swelling. IBD arthritis is a form of Spondloarthropty and is classed as such. Though in many cases the presentation is not arthritic but a form of arthralgia or a form of enthesis.
